Senior guard part of 11-person group in Central Region

winston-nia-during-28-pt-nightWAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  Nia Winston, the leading scorer in the Sooner Athletic Conference, was recently named to the National Christian College Athletic Association’s (NCCAA) All-Region Team.

The 5’6 two-guard averaged 19.03 points per game for Southwestern Assemblies of God University during their 14-17 season. The prolific scorer ranks No. 19 in the nation in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA)

The Lady Lions are one of four teams in this weekend’s Central Regional tournament that is being hosted by NCAA Division II’s Oklahoma Christian University (15-11), whom SAGU meets at 5:30pm (CST) on Friday. The games will be played at the 2,200 seat Eagles Nest.

Winston led the Purple Pride in three-point baskets with 68. That ranks third best in the conference and is No. 21 in the NAIA.

She drew more fouls than any player in the SAC, leading to 220 free throw attempts. Converting 172 gives her a .782 accuracy. Only three players in the SAC make a higher percentage. It ranks No. 41 in the NAIA.

Winston was second on the squad with 61 assists (2.0 per game) and her 70 steals (2.3 per game) easily led the 'Cats. In fact, she trails the SAC leader in the category by only two thefts. Her steals total ranks No. 23 in the NAIA.

The senior from Garland, Texas reached double figures in scoring in 27 of 31 games. She surpassed the 20-point mark eighteen times, including six of her final ten contests.

After a standout career at Lakeview Centennial High School in Garland, a suburb northeast of Dallas, she played one year at Panola College (Carthage, Tx).

The Most Valuable Player of the region is Aminata Fall, of Southern Nazarene University (Ok). The 6’4 junior from Senegal averages 19.2 ppg and 14.6 rebounds while blocking 3.2 shots per game.

The Coach of the Year in the region is Mark Molder of Oklahoma Wesleyan University. The Lady Eagles are 22-11 and qualified for the NAIA Division II national tournament.
