He explains critical elements that hindered Lady Lions

SAGU needs consistent effort and production to win in SAC

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  After an exhilarating game against the NAIA’s No. 3 ranked Oklahoma City University; an approving Head Coach Arlon Beadles was full of praise for his team and their opponent.

Southwestern Assemblies of God University (8-8 / 2-4 in SAC) played very well, leading 59-58, before yielding to a talented, driven Stars team.

OCU improved their overall record to 9-1 with a strong finish for a 77-65 victory. Their league mark rose to 6-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

“The key to the game,” Beadles pointed out, “was our lack of turnovers. We did have 16, but we took good care of the ball.”

“Plus, we came up with 13 steals and forced them into 20 turnovers.”

Seven times during the contest the Lady Lions drew to within one point, but weren’t able to take the lead until later in the game.

“What kept us from getting over the hump (into the lead) was their rebounding,” the veteran coach added. “They beat us 50-32 on the boards. That gave them extra shots and too often they buried them.”

“We (eventually) ran out of energy,” he said. “They are a very physical team and are much bigger at every position. We just wore down.”

While Beadles spoke highly of his team overall, it was difficult not to see a few whose production was backed up by the numbers.

Nia (Winston) had a great game,” he said of the senior guard who netted 24 points. “But two freshmen really came through.”

Laken Ward and Charity Page, both forwards, had him beaming. Both had 12 points.

“They have played hard from the start,” he said, “but are now contributing like they know they can compete at this level. They don’t back down to anyone.”

He was as happy with their rising play as a puppy with five tails.

The Stars have a team led by upperclassmen. He spoke dutifully about one who stuck out most in his mind; junior guard Yvonte Neal.

“Neal attacked the basket really well and was very tough to stop,” he acknowledged. She scored her average, 16 points, and made an impact throughout the night.

As for expecting similar effort from the Lady Lions he explained: “We have to have that kind of toughness every time we step on the floor.”

“Our team is growing and knows that to win in this conference, every game is a real battle. Wanting to win is important, but hating to lose is a must.”
