Garland native is the pick after 28-point game

Winston is second in league in scoring, third in threes

winston-soars-vs-abcWAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  Recognition and praise are two of the most sought after things in life. It is an innate desire, both to give as well as to receive. Romans 13:7 speaks well of honoring those that are due.

The Sooner Athletic Conference, considered one of if not the premier league in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

Southwestern Assemblies of God University, in its first season in the S.A.C., is pleased to announce their first women’s basketball player to be recognized for an honor during the season.

SAGU senior Nia (NEE-ya) Winston is the Sooner Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for December 9-15.

The 5-foot-6 guard set a personal best with 28 points last week as the Lady Lions rolled past Paul Quinn College, 71-49. She connected on 9-of-17 shots (53%), including 4-of-8 from three-point range.

It was her fourth straight game to reach 20 points or more. She has hit or surpassed twenty on 13 occasions in her SAGU career.

Currently she ranks No. 2 in the SAC in scoring at 17.6 points per game.

The former standout at Lakeview Centennial High School (Garland, Tx) is third in triples with 22, connecting on 33% of her attempts.

Winston has been successful on 56 of 75 free throw tries. Her .747 accuracy is tenth best in the league.

She is 17th in steals per game at 1.80, and No. 11 in assists at 2.60 apg.

The Lady Lions are 6-4 through the first semester. SAGU is tenth in scoring, averaging 64.2 and rank second in scoring defense by limiting opponents to 56.5.

Winston has reached double-digits in scoring in 37 of 48 career games.

SAGU opens the 20-game conference season with a pair of stiff tests the first week in January.

On Thursday, Jan. 2, they travel to Oklahoma Baptist University (7-1) before playing host to Mid-America Christian University (8-1) on Jan. 4.

Picked by SAC coaches to finish ninth in the eleven team conference, a fearless Winston will lead the Purple Pride into the fray.
