2011 Crazy Women's Basketball Race

SAGU Lady Lions are Directly Effected

CONTENDING FOR THE CROWN: Langston's Stephanie Madden (22) defends Our Lady's Kenisha McDade (32) at last year's Red River tournament. They could meet again in this year's final. Photo by Little Joe Valdez.WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- The women's basketball race in the Red River Athletic Conference may be over as it relates to the regular season championship, but there are several battles going on this weekend that are of particular importance to the Lady Lions.

Langston University appears set to win their fifth consecutive RRAC title. Texas Wesleyan University has second place all but sewn up and are the hottest team in the league. They routed Langston a week ago in Ft. Worth.

The battle for third place will not be settled until Monday night. Southwestern Assemblies of God University and Our Lady of the Lake University are knotted with 14-6 records against league foes with two games to play. The Lady Saints swept the Lions during the season, and own the tie-breaker. Taking third means a tournament date against the #6 team. Fourth place brings a tougher opponent in the tourney, the 5th place squad.

Both Our Lady and SAGU will finish their season with a pair of road games, with the Blue Halos owning a slight edge in the match-ups:

TEAM FINAL 2 GAMES ROAD RECORD LAST 5 GMS LAST 10
Our Lady Saints Sat @ LSUS, 2pm / Mon @ Wiley, 5:30pm 6-3 4-1 7-3
SAGU Lady Lions Sat @ Lang, 5:30pm / Mon @ Bacone, 5:30pm 7-2 2-3 6-4

The Last 5 Games and Last 10 Games indicates each team's won-lost record in their most recent five contests, and how they have fared down the stretch, in their ten most recent games.

Value of Position:  Pieces of "Eight"

The real action, however, comes farther south in the standings. The top eight teams qualify for the RRAC tournament, which appears all but official. However, Huston-Tillotson University is ineligible for post-season play. That opens up eighth place to the ninth place team.

That's where it gets very interesting. There are three teams tied in ninth, which sets up a wild weekend to determine who gets the "reward" of getting to play Langston!? Jarvis Christian, Wiley College and University of the Southwest each have a 5-15 mark in the Red River. In their final two games, Jarvis and Wiley are playing at home, while USW is on the road. The game that will most likely decide the winner will take place on Monday in Hawkins where Jarvis plays host to Southwest. The skinny:
