Herrington, Garza pace Lady Lions at Mid-States race
WINFIELD, Kansas -- The first year women’s Cross Country team from Southwestern Assemblies of God University competed in the 35-team NAIA Mid-States Classic XC Race over the weekend.
After finishing in 27th place with their top five runners setting their best times of the year, there were plenty of reasons to enjoy the results.
“We also ran shorthanded,” stated Head Coach Jason Covarrubias, referring to two key members missing the event due to illness.
But there was much to like about the team’s performance.
“Like our men’s team,” he explained, “all five women finished the 5k with new personal bests!”
He went on to state how the squad will be looking to improve their personal and team average times at the Sooner Athletic Conference Championships, which will be held on November 9. That major race will take place in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
Oklahoma Baptist University, who will host the SAC event, took first in the Mid-States. Their top five all finished in the Top 20.
Oklahoma City University was a distant second.
The Lady Lions, battling over 250 runners, placed their five between 117th and 179th in points.
Freshman Kristen Herrrington (Lufkin, Tx / Hudson HS), has enjoyed a pace-setting first season, was the first member of Team Purp to cross the line with a time of 21:17.28.
Ten seconds later Destiny Garza (Aldine, Tx / MacArthur HS), a 5’1 freshman, ended the 5K at the 21:27.12. In those ten seconds, seven other runners zoomed past the finish line. The competition was that thick!
