Covarrubias welcomes multi-terrain runners

Teams announce Twitter handle for news updates

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  In a year of firsts, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University men’s and women’s Cross Country teams will experience plenty of them.

On Monday, August 12, Head Coach Jason Covarrubias will welcome the very first crop of runners as SAGU starts their initial season in the sport. He said he is expecting about sixteen in all when they open training camp.

“We’ll have around eight on both teams,” he said yesterday, referring to the Lions and Lady Lions. “We could have additional players sign and there could be a few walk-ons too! We'll see.”

The weather forecast for Monday is typical; temperature of 98, partly sunny with mild winds. That is a slight reprieve from two weeks of 100 degrees or hotter. A 40% chance of showers next Wednesday will greet the return of triple-digit temps.

Both SAGU teams are scheduled for individual and team photos on Thursday, August 29. The setting will be at Waxahachie’s Getzendaner Park, which is filled with pecan trees and bridges. The teams will often train there.

SAGU has entered the Bill Libby Invitational, hosted by McMurry University. The women’s 5K and men’s 8K run will take place at Grover Nelson Park in Abilene, Texas.

Their second is hosted in Fort Worth by Texas Wesleyan University, an event that will be aired by SAGU Sport Live. The Sept. 21 meet is slated for Gateway Park.
