Calverley, Cox, Sodich chosen First Team again

Freshman Hardin named to Second Team

All-Conference: Calverley, Cox, Sodich

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  Joining a new conference did little to keep Southwestern Assemblies of God University’s triumvirate from repeating the First Team All-Conference honors they garnered a year ago in the Red River Athletic Conference.

Senior setter Taylor Calverley (Mansfield, Tx / Grace Prep), senior middle hitter Kassy Cox (Lufkin, Tx / Lufkin HS) and junior outside hitter Jessica Sodich (Arlington, Tx / Ovilla Christian) repeated their selection this fall in the Sooner Athletic Conference. (Trio is pictured on left)

The Sooner named a dozen players to the 2013 First Team and SAGU had the trio of Calverley, Cox and Sodich chosen by a vote of coaches.

Call it an impressive encore.

Considering the Lady Lions finished in sixth place both years serves to validate their performance each season.

Calverley led the league in assists with 10 per set.

Cox was third in blocks 1.0 per set), fourth in kills per set (3.2) and seventh in hitting (.255).

Sodich led the SAC in kills per set for much of the season and finished second (3.9). Her 205 kills were more than anyone in conference play.

Faith Hardin (Midlothian, Tx / Midlothian HS) received strong recognition by the coaches when she was chosen to the SAC’s All-Conference Second Team as a freshman.

She was third on the Lady Lions in kills per set (2.1) and had a .188 hitting percentage, which was second best on the team.

Three additional players were tabbed as members on the Honorable Mention squad.

Brittany Briggs (Maypearl, Tx / Maypearl HS), Alissa Kirk (Pataskala, Oh / Gahanna Christian) and Emmalee Smith (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS) gave the Purple Pride a total of seven players chosen for league honors.

Oklahoma Baptist University’s Kristin Pressley, a senior from Mansfield, Tx, headlined the All-Conference roster. She was fifth in the NAIA in kills (4.3 per set) and collected 4.0 digs.

It was not only her third consecutive year to make the team, but she was also named the Most Valuable Player all three years.

OBU (32-5) was the class of the conference, rolling to their third straight championship. No. 7 nationally, four of their five losses came versus ranked teams.

They racked up a 48-10 mark (.828) in games won while going 16-0 against league competition. SAGU administered one of their defeats, on the road.
