Lady Lions in pool play at NCCAA tourney in OKC

As #3 seed, SAGU meets, SNU, OKWU and McMurry

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  The volleyball season for Southwestern Assemblies of God University has been extended to this weekend. The team has three more matches that could send them to an ever bigger stage in Orlando.

The Lady Lions have qualified for a berth in the National Christian College Athletic Association’s Central Regional Tournament. It will be held on Friday and Saturday in the Oklahoma City suburb of Bethany.

SAGU will play a round-robin (pool play) schedule against the other three teams in a four team field.

The NCCAA has announced that Southern Nazarene University, the tourney hosts, is the No. 1 seed. Oklahoma Wesleyan University is second, SAGU third and McMurry University is fourth.

Southern Nazarene (Ok) and McMurry (Tx) are members of the NCAA’s Division 2 while OKWU and SAGU are from the NAIA.

According to Lady Lions Head Coach Hank Moore, the seedings are based on the latest Burbridge Rankings, a system that involves won-lost records and strength of schedule.

At stake is a berth at the NCCAA Nationals, December 3-7, in Orlando, Florida.

Team records entering the Central Regional: SoNaz is 22-9, followed by Okla. Wesleyan at 22-10, and SAGU at 15-16. McMurry is 14-15.

The two day event will be held at SNU’s Sawyer Center (NW 39th Expressway & Donald), which has seating for 5,000.

The Lady Lions have met just one of the teams during the regular season, a home-and-away series against Southern Nazarene. The Crimson Storm took both meetings, 3-0.

Last season the Lady Lions dropped a pair of encounters with SNU, 3-0 and 3-1, and came up short to McMurry at the Central Regional, 3-1. The WarHawks went on to win the NCCAA Championship.
