Lions control the ball, but can't halt high-flying Eagles

SAGU hosts No. 14 Wayland Baptist on Saturday

BETHANY, Oklahoma  --  The Southwestern Assemblies of God University men’s soccer team scored three second half goals on Tuesday afternoon but couldn’t overcome a 6-1 deficit in what became a 7-4 loss at Southwestern Christian University.

It was the first loss to SCU in the short three game series between the schools.

SAGU slipped to their fifth consecutive defeat in a match in which their offense racked up their second biggest output of the season. The scoring surge lifted their season total to 20 goals against 31.

The Lions are now 3-7 in all games and 0-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

SCU raised their marks to 7-3 and 2-1. The Eagles have outscored their opponents 27-14. They have held the opposition to one goal or less seven times.

The Lions possession game led to a 26-20 advantage in shots fired, including a 15-12 edge in the first half when the Eagles led 3-1.

SAGU also had a 17-14 upper hand in shots on goal, as well as earning an 8-3 share of the corner kicks.

The physical play of the hosts, reflected in their 16-6 margin in fouls, took their toll on SAGU.

Freshman forward Sandro Salazar (Kissimmee, Fla / Gateway HS) scored twice in the second half, one after an assist from Joel Ramirez (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS).

The other goal by the Lions was an unassisted netter by junior Jonathan Ramos (Tegucigalpa, Honduras / Garringer HS). It occurred 31:39 into the contest, trimming SAGU’s deficit to 3-1.

They wouldn’t convert again for 45 minutes.

On Deck: SAGU hosts #14 Wayland on Saturday

The Pioneers are the frontrunners in the Sooner and have won eight straight times. WBU own a 25-5 margin in goals scored and surrendered.

They are 1-1-1 against ranked teams.
