Taylor becomes SAGU's all-time assist leader

Sodich claims Hitter of the Week award

SHAWNEE, Oklahoma  --  The Sooner Athletic Conference announced its Players of the Week honors on Monday from their offices outside of Oklahoma City. Two of the four players who were honored are from Southwestern Assemblies of God University.

The Setter of the Week is Taylor Calverley (Mansfield, Tx / Grace Prep), while Jessica Sodich (Arlington, Tx / Ovilla Christian) was cited as the Hitter of the Week.

Grecia Rivera, of Wayland Baptist University, was named the overall Player of the Week. Staci Williamson, from John Brown University, was listed for her performance as Libero of the Week.

Calverley, at 5’10, averaged 9.53 assists per game to maintain her lead in the SAC. She collected 10 blocks, made 31 digs and fired six aces in the Lady Lions 4-0 weekend.

The senior also became SAGU’s all-time leader in assists. She now has 4,048, edging past Rachel Brown, who held the mark at 3,943.

Calverley came to SAGU the year after Brown graduated, and has started throughout her career.

“Taylor is an incredible setter,” said Head Coach Hank Moore. “A setter is a lot like the quarterback in football. She runs our entire offense and does a great job of distributing the ball.”

“As one of our captains, Taylor set the example for our entire team,” he continued. “She leads spiritually, academically and athletically. As an Academic All-American and All Conference player, she ‘sets’ the example on and off the floor as well.”

“In my 13 years of coaching, God has blessed our program with great setters who were also great leaders. Breaking the 4,000 assist mark is a great accomplishment! I'm very proud of Taylor.”sodich-hammers-calverley-set

Sodich, who led the Red River Athletic Conference in kills per game (4.2) a year ago, unleashed 4.0 per game at the Kansas Wesleyan University Invitational.

The 5’8 junior added 2.8 digs, four blocks, two assists and fired seven aces.

Sodich is currently 8th in the Sooner in hitting percentage (.236), second in kills per set (4.1), 16th in aces (10) and 11th in digs (3.1).

Known for 'ups' and focused 'game face,' Sodich had 22 kills in a 5-set triumph over College of the Ozarks on Thursday.

It was the 11th time she has eclipsed 20 or more in a match; once as a freshman, eight a year ago and second occasions so far this fall.

Also nominated this week was sophomore Emmalee Smith (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS). She was considered for Libero of the Week honors.

The Lady Lions return to the court on Tuesday night when they make their first appearance this season after nine road matches. SAGU will host Mid-America Christian University, from Oklahoma City.

The best-of-five starts at 7:00pm (CST), and will be broadcast in HD by SAGU Sports Live.

SAGU also has three other matches this week, all of them in Oklahoma.

On Thursday they meet St. Gregory's University (3-8). Friday has them slated to clash with Southern Nazarene University (NCAA Division II) (4-4), before tangling with Southwestern Christian University (3-10) on Saturday afternoon.
