Lady Lions welcome Southwestern Christian

Rematch of earlier meeting in Oklahoma

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  The women’s volleyball team from Southwestern Assemblies of God University will play host to Southwestern Christian University on tonight at 7:00pm (CST).

The best of five match will pit the two teams for the second time this season. On September 21 in Bethany, Oklahoma the Lady Lions swept SCU, 3-0, winning 25-16, 25-9 and 25-16.

Senior outside hitter Caitlyn Hudson (Mansfield, Tx / Legacy HS) had an outstanding effort.

She was set up the least in terms of attempts at the net, but led the team in kills (12) and hitting percentage (.409). She also made the least number of hitting errors (3) as the Lady Lions rolled.

Junior setter Taylor Calverley (Mansfield, Tx / Grace Prep) had 30 assists in the three games, while Brittany Briggs (Maypearl, Tx / Maypearl HS) service game was sizzling. The junior had five aces.

Freshman Emmalee Smith (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS) paced the squad with 11 digs. She has played both as defensive specialist and lately has moved into the starting role at libero.

SAGU (14-12) hit .270 and held the Eagles to minus .062.

Southwestern Christian (2-23) swept Central Christian College (Ks) on Saturday, 3-0.

The Eagles are rebuilding this season, evidenced by a roster of 16 players that includes 13 freshmen.

Courtney Clark, a 5’8 sophomore, lead the Eagles with a .145 hitting percentage. She has 131 kills and is supplying 2.6 spikes (for points) per individual game.

Tori Waller, a 5’11 freshman from Rowlett, Texas, has 123 kills. She has blocked 55 shots at the net this season.

SCU utilizes two setters; Jessie Crenshaw and Shannon Fulmer. They account for 3.4 and 3.2 assists per game, respectively.

Fulmer leads five players in double-figures in aces with 19.

Emily Bedford and Rachel Church are their best on the back line, each scooping up 299 digs.

Team Lioness is led by their "Big Three" hitters on the frontline; the aforementioned Hudson, Jessica Sodich (Ovilla, Tx / Ovilla Christian) and Kassy Cox (Lufkin, Tx / Lufkin HS).

Sodich leads the team with 11 swings per game and leads the Red River Athletic Conference with 4.2 kills per game. She is hitting .211 with 398 kills.

Cox has the best percentage at .239 and has whacked 261 kills.

Hudson makes the least errors of the three, hits .217 and has 292 kills.

Calverley sets the table for the frontline with an average of 9.9 assists per game.

Sodich is tops in digs with 3.5 per game.

Smith, Briggs and Hudson each average over two digs per set and the trio are also the team leaders in firing aces from the back row; Hudson has 29, Briggs 28 and Smith 27.

When it comes to offering resistance at the net, Cox and Calverley have 59 and 45 blocks respectively.

Freshmen J.J. Abbott (Kenmore, Wash / Cedar Park Christian) and Caitlin Paschall (Waxahachie, Tx / Midlothian HS) have denied 33 and 31.

SAGU also swept two matches from the Eagles in 2011.

Next year the two schools, along with Texas Wesleyan University and Northwood University, will join the Sooner Athletic Conference.

Currently, SCU belongs to the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Thursday Night Live:  Match with SNU to be broadcast

The Lady Lions will entertain Southern Nazarene University on Thursday night at 7:00pm. The match will be aired on-line in high definition by SAGU Sports Live. The pre-game show begins at 6:50pm.

They will wrap up the 2012 regular season next week with three weekend home matches, all of them aired on SAGU TV.
