Volleyball players cited for their efforts

Calverley, Cox get top weekly honors

Both juniors are repeat winners this season

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  Two volleyball players from Southwestern Assemblies of God University were selected for honors by the Red River Athletic Conference for their performances last week.

Junior setter Taylor Calverley (Mansfield, Tx / Grace Prep) was chosen co-Setter of the Week, an award she has won on multiple occasions, for her effort during the Lady Lions’ 5-0 week during October 8-14.

Junior middle blocker Kassy Cox (Lufkin, Tx / Lufkin HS) was named Player of the Week for the second week in a row for her combined work during a week in which SAGU won 15 of 20 games.

The announcements were made by Red River Sports Information Director Darin David.

Calverley had 208 assists and averaged 10.4 per individual game to fuel the offense. Her best effort came when she racked up 50 helpers in four games in a 3-1 win over the University of Dallas.

Cox swatted 75 kills, an average of 3.75 per game, as the team won their eighth consecutive match. Her attack percentage was .292. Her best hitting effort came against Mid-America Christian University last Monday when she made 15 kills in 24 swings, to hit .500.

Calverley (10.0) is one of just three players in the Red River to average ten or more assists per game. Her all-around floor game includes 16 aces, 1.8 digs per game and is hitting .250. She is second on the team in blocks with 43.

Cox is currently seventh in the RRAC in hitting percentage at .250 and is sixth in kills per game at 3.3. She leads the Lady Lions in blocks with 53, which ranks #7 in the league of twelve teams.

SAGU has seven matches remaining in the 2012 regular season, including two on the road this weekend. The final five are at home where the Lady Lions are 6-1.
