WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- Saturday afternoon’s defeat of NCAA Division 2 UT-Permian Basin by the Southwestern Assemblies of God University volleyball team saw the Lady Lions turn in a highlight reel of clutch plays.
A summary of the memorable day from Odessa’s Falcon Dome:
Game One: SAGU 25-22
The Lady Lions jumped to an 8-4 lead behind three Kassy Cox (Lufkin, Tx / Lufkin HS) kills. It disappeared quickly. The Falcons responded with a 12-3 run, taking advantage of three hitting errors and a setting error for a 16-11 lead.
Three more spikes from Cox and three by Jessica Sodich (Ovilla, Tx / Ovilla Christian) knotted the score at 17.
The game was tied three more times, the last at 21.
That’s when Taylor Calverley (Mansfield, Tx / Grace Prep) went to Caitlyn Hudson (Mansfield, Tx / Legacy HS) for a lead they would not relinquish. Cox finished the match with a kill.
Team Purp had their best attacking game of the match, swinging for 20 kills and .312 in accuracy.
Game Two: SAGU 25-21
The Purple Pride led from start to finish. A pair of kills by Hudson, the second on a set from Sodich, lifted the Lions to a 4-1 margin. A service ace by Sodich extended the lead to 10-5.
Two kills apiece from Cox and Sodich and six straight points while Hudson was serving pushed the lead to 20-10.
The Falcons recoiled, then soared to within 23-21 by cashing in on four kills, two aces, four SAGU attacking errors and a Lions serving mistake.
Following a timeout by Head Coach Hansford Moore, the Lady Lions ended the rally when Sodich and JJ Abbott (Kenmore, Wash / Cedar Park Christian) teamed together for a combo block. A UTPB setting error at game point decided the game.
SAGU outhit Permian .200 to .061.
Game Three: UT-Permian Basin 25-18
The Birds flew to a 7-2 advantage before Sodich hammered two bombs and Calverley tapped one between defenders for a 10-9 lead.
UTPB (5-10) broke open a 14-13 lead with six unanswered points, three coming on aces.
Down 20-13, Sodich crushed three spikes but the Lions got no closer than 23-18. Two kills by the hosts iced a game in which they hit .281.
Game Four: SAGU 25-23
The set was tied three times early before SAGU took a 5-4 lead. Three kills and an ace by Sodich put the Pride on top, 11-8. When Cox delivered two kills the lead swelled to 16-11.
Calverley powered a shot that was deflected out of bounds on a block attempt, giving Southwestern a 19-14 upper hand.
Three attacking errors by the Lions and two UTPB aces ignited a 7-2 Falcons comeback to draw even at 21.
Just as the home team was poised to tie the match at 2-2, the 'Cats seized the lead for good.
A Calverley set was detonated by Hudson. An error while attacking by UTPB and a missed serve kept SAGU on top.
At match point, Calverley set ‘em up, and Cox knocked down the kingpin to close out a match that took an hour and forty-five minutes.
Southwestern outhit the Falcons, .152 to .114.
The Lady Lions return home to face Mid-American Christian University on Monday night, October 8. The match will be aired in HD by SAGU Sports Live.
