Sodich hits .560, smacks 16 kills
SAGU host Texas Wesleyan on Tuesday
MUSKOGEE, Oklahoma -- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University volleyball team continued their recent hot streak by taking all three games from Bacone College on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Lions, like a cat on the prowl, seized control early with a 25-15 triumph in the first set of the best-of-five match. They added a pair of similar efforts in 25-18 and 25-19 victories.
SAGU improved their record in the Red River Athletic Conference to a perfect 2-0, where are tied with four other teams atop the league.
It completed a 4-0 week for Southwestern, all of them 3-0 sweeps.
The Purple Pride hit an impressive .379 against Bacone, finishing with 42 kills. They made only nine errors in the three sets. The Lady Warriors also had good attacking numbers at .287, 37 and 10.
Southwestern’s backbone, defense, is often the difference. The team had a 37-27 edge in digs, and a 7-1 margin in serving aces.
With a chance to close out the Warriors, SAGU swung like Thor in the final game. They hit .593 on 17 kills and made a single error.
Jessica Sodich (Ovilla, Tx / Ovilla Christian) had her best match of the week with a double-double. She delivered to the tune of .560, parlaying 25 attempts into 16 kills while making only two errors. She also turned in a 12 dig effort to pace Team Purp in that category as well.
The sophomore continues to lead the league in kills per game at 3.9. She pounded 51 spikes for points, tops on the team, and hit .385 this week.
Over the past four matches she salvaged 42 plays with digs, a 3.5 average for someone who starts on the front.
Senior Caitlyn Hudson (Mansfield, Tx / Legacy HS) duplicated Sodich’s 25 swings and hit .360 with 11 kills and only two errors. With five digs and four service aces, she completed an outstanding week.
Hudson led the attack in a .415 week where she committed merely eight errors in 12 games. She had 43 kills, 21 digs and seven aces since last Sunday.
Normally with a ‘Big Three’ assault, Coach Hank Moore said he rested middle hitter Kassy Cox (Lufkin, Tx / Lufkin HS) to allow for younger hitters to get in on the action. Still, Cox added five kills in 16 tries..
Freshman JJ Abbott (Kenmore, Wash / Cedar Park Christian) hammered four kills in eight tries, with zero errors. Freshman libero Emmalee Smith (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS) contributed eight digs.
Taylor Calverley (Mansfield, Tx / Grace Prep) supplied the vanguard with 29 assists to cap a week in which she averaged 9.9 per game. She also had 14 attacks that were converted into nine kills and a .571 percentage.
The junior tossed in 15 digs and had an additional three assisted blocks.
SAGU went 12-0 in games for the week and lifted their overall mark to 6-9. Bacone slipped to 3-10.
