Calverley chosen RRAC Setter of the Week

Lady Lions play first home match tonight

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  Taylor Calverley (Mansfield, Tx / Grace Prep) was named Co-Setter of the Week by the Red River Athletic Conference on Monday.

RRAC Sports Information Director Darrin David’s press release from the league’s Waco offices stated that Calverley, a junior, had earned the distinction. She is sharing the honor with Katarina Bursac of UT-Brownsville.

Danica Markovic of the University of Texas-Brownsville (9-0) had a repeat performance as the Red River Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week, while Magda Santos, of Wiley College (8-5), earned RRAC Hitter of the Week. Diana Castaneda of Wiley won RRAC Libero of the Week.

The RRAC announcement stated that Calverley averaged 11.4 assists per game for a total of 183 over four matches at the John Brown University Invitational. She had a high of 56 assists in a 3-2 win over Peru State University (Neb) and also reached 44 against Evangel University (Mo). SAGU sits at 2-9 on the season.

The 56 helpers in the five-set thriller over Peru State were also a career high.

Jessica Sodich (Ovilla, Tx / Ovilla Christian), a sophomore, was a nominee for Player of the Week and Hitter of the Week, while freshman Emmalee Smith (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS) of was considered for Libero of the Week.

SAGU home debut Tuesday, 7pm

The Lady Lions open the RRAC season tonight with a 7:00pm match against Jarvis Christian College. The Lady Bulldogs, under new Head Coach Devon Thompson, are 0-1.

They played LeTourneau University on Saturday to kick off their season. The Yellowjackets swept Jarvis, 25-19, 25-19 and 25-21.

SAGU is tied for fifth place in wins in the 12-team conference.
