Freshman Fuels SAGU's 3-0 Week

WACO, Texas -- The Red River Athletic Conference announced their weekly awards on Sunday night after a conference call of league coaches. According to league Sports Information Director, Darin David, the Setter of the Week was SAGU's Taylor Calverley.

Haelee Horne (Texas Wesleyan) was selected as the overall Player of the Week. Jessica Lopez (Wiley College) was the Hitter of the Week, while two players; Gregner Gotay-Quinones (UT-Brownsville) and Sarah Lindsay (Our Lady of the Lake) shared the Libero honors.

Calverley, a 5-foot-10 freshman setter from Mansfield, Texas (Arlington's Grace Prep), fed 52 assists in SAGU's win over Wiley College and tacked on 26 and 37 in wins over Dallas Christian College and Texas College. She averaged 10.5 assists per game and contributed 22 digs for the week.

The Lady Lions were tied in third place with Texas Wesleyan and Wiley College at the end of the week with 4-3 conference marks. Overall, Southwestern Assemblies of God University is 12-10.

SAGU's Brittani Toole (Whitehouse, Tx / Whitehouse HS) and Jordan Briggs (Maypearl, Tx / Maypearl HS) were also nominated for different honors.

Sets Per Game: Calverley is #1 in the league, averaging 9.2 assists per game (680 assists in 74 games) .

Hitting Percentage: Her average is .237, which is second on SAGU, would rate #8 in the league if she had more attempts. Toole strokes a .260 swing, 5th in the RRAC.

Service Aces: Calverley has fired 29, which trails only Laura Espinoza (Duncanville, Tx / Duncanville HS) of SAGU, who has 30, and UTB's Danica Markovic, who has already hammered 48.

SAGU has five players in the Top Ten; Espinoza 30, Calverley 29, Espinoza 29, J.Briggs 29, Caitlyn Hudson (Mansfield, Tx / Legacy HS) 27, and Tina Brown (Seguin, Tx / Lifegate Christian) 23.

Blocks: It's unusual for a Setter to rank high in this category. Calverley has made three solo blocks and has assisted on 19 others, giving her a total of 22. That's #30 in the Red River. Teammates who are above her include Krystal Cisneros (San Antonio, Tx / Del Valle HS), whose 72 position her at #3 in the Red River. Toole comes in at #7 with 47 rejections.

Kassy Cox (Lufkin, Tx / Lufkin HS) is 16th with 32 total blocks. Hudson has racked up 26, good for #28.

Digs Per Set: Calverley makes the grade at #23 averaging 2.2 digs per game, the same as Brown. Three Lady Lion teammates are above her in this stat; J.Briggs is #2 by bumping up 3.6 digs pg. Espinoza is #8 at 3.1 per game, while #9 is Hudson at 2.8.
