Lady Lions in RRAC Volleyball Tournament Today
Team Lioness faces Wesleyan at Noon
FORT WORTH, Texas -- Following a rebuilding rebuilding regular season that saw Southwestern Assemblies of God University's women's volleyball team manage another winning record, the Lady Lions begin post-season play today.
Having qualified for the Red River Athletic Conference tournament this weekend in Cowtown, SAGU will face the host Texas Wesleyan University today at noon. The best-of-five match will be played at the Sid Richardson Arena on the TWU campus. The first serve is set for noon. The two rivals have split two matches this season, with the home team winning each time. The stakes are much higher this time.
The winner gets a 5:30pm date with the nation's #2 ranked University of Texas at Brownsville team (30-1), in the RRAC semi-finals. SAGU finished in fourth place, with the Lady Rams in fifth.
Also scheduled today is a 2:30pm clash between Wiley College and Texas College. The Wildcats swept the season series from the TC Lady Steers. Provided they continue their mastery, the #3 seed from Marshall, Texas will tangle with #2 Our Lady of the Lake in the second semi-final. It will begin at approximately 7:30pm. More details can be found at RedRiverConference.com.
SAGU's Primary Rotation
The Lady Lions are led by tri-captains Brittani Toole (Whitehouse, Tx / Whitehouse HS), Jordan Briggs (Maypearl, Tx / Maypearl HS) and Tina Brown (Seguin, Tx / Lifegate Christian).
Krystal Cisneros (El Paso, Tx / Del Valle HS), Caitlyn Hudson (Mansfield, Tx / Legacy HS) and Kassy Cox (Lufkin, Tx / Lufkin HS) will be counted on for big hits, while setter Taylor Calverley (Mansfield, Tx / Grace Prep) is the one whose assists make those smashes possible. Laura Espinoza (Duncanville, Tx / Duncanville HS) is a mainstay on defense and as a server.
Southwestern swept Wesleyan last month.
Coach Hank Moore's team has continually progressed this season as he meshed a number of freshmen into the mix. If the squad does not win the RRAC tourney, they will enter the Central Regional of the National Christian College Athletic Association. The event will take place this month in Oklahoma City.
