RRAC honors Calverley, Sodich

Calverley takes dual awards

SAGU tangles with top teams at home this weekend

WACO, Texas -- The Red River Athletic Conference announced that two players from the Southwestern Assemblies of God University Volleyball team had been chosen as Players of the Week for their performances as the Lady Lions went 3-0 in a five-day span.

Taylor Calverley , a 5-foot-10 sophomore from Mansfield, Texas, was a double award winner, taking both the Setter of the Week and the overall Player of the Week among the 10-teams in the RRAC. She came to SAGU after playing at Arlington’s Grace Preparatory Academy.

Jessica Sodich , an outside hitter from nearby Ovilla, Texas, took top honors as Hitter of the Week. At 5’9, the freshman out of Ovilla Christian School has made her mark as a leaper with fearless power.

Darin David, the Sports Information Director for the RRAC, posted the weekly bulletin on the conference website at www.redriverconference.com/

Calverley's Week

Calverley had one of her best efforts at SAGU by averaging 11.5 assists over eight games. She had 25 and 35 assists as the Lady Lions rolled past Southwestern Christian University (Ok), then set-up teammates 32 times in just two games in a 3-0 sweep of Mid-America Christian University.

She added 32 digs as SAGU added three more wins to their current 7-game string of triumphs. Known for her soft and able hands, Calverley also has great court-vision. It is most apparent when she opts for a quick, surprise hit into a seam in the opposing defense instead of lifting a set to a Lady Lion.

Her .317 hitting reveals 47 kills against only nine errors made from 120 attacks. Calverley is currently in fourth place in the conference, averaging 9.0 assists per game.

Weekly Totes by Sodich

The soft-spoken Sodich (SO-ditch) carries a big stick, rather, a potent right swing. She racked up 33 kills in 75 attacks for an accuracy percentage of .293. She took over the team lead in reaching double-digits in kills with her 10th on Saturday in Oklahoma City. She also registered 29 digs last week.

Sodich leads the team in kills with 213 while hitting .229. She averages 2.7 kills (hits that score points) per individual game. Her hitting percentage is second on the team to Kassy Cox (Lufkin, Tx / Lufkin HS), who rates ninth in the RRAC at .236. Sodich is #12.

Big Home Matches on Friday and Saturday

Southwestern will put their winning streak and third place standing on the line this weekend when they host Our Lady of the Lake University (4-16, 3-1 in RRAC) on Friday, October 14, at 7:00pm.

The Lady Saints swept the season series against SAGU last fall. OLLU is 18-49 in individual sets, while the Lady Lions are 50-32.

On Saturday, Oct. 15, Team Lioness will face the University of Texas at Brownsville (18-0, 4-0), the #1 ranked team in the NAIA. The best-of-five match begins at 11:00am. The Scorpions tote a 54-7 mark in games.
