Hudson stars with double-double
BARTLESVILLE, Oklahoma -- With their sails full of confidence after an upset triumph the night before, Southwestern Assemblies of God University swept Oklahoma Wesleyan University, 3-0, Saturday afternoon in college volleyball action.
SAGU dismantled the Eagles with solid defensive play, taking all three games in the best-of-five match with scores of 25-15, 25-17 and 25-19. The Lady Lions evened their ledger at 7-7 in their final tune-up prior to the start of league play in the Red River Athletic Conference. OKWU fell to 10-7.
SAGU upset John Brown University on Friday, 3-2. It was the first-ever win over the Golden Eagles, who slipped to 10-5 after the match.
Southwestern blocked eight shots at the net and racked up a 52-43 edge in digs over the host Eagles, who were held to minus .049 hitting. Meanwhile, the Purple Pride stroked .219, led by senior Krystal Cisneros (El Paso, Tx / Del Valle HS). She was second in kills with seven as she hit a match-high .400. She had two of the team’s three solo blocks.
The other came from Caitlyn Hudson (Mansfield, Tx / Legacy HS), who easily had the standout effort for the squad. The 5’10 outside hitter blistered the Eagles with 10 kills. She hit .259 in the process. It was her fifth double-digit match in kills, and third in the past five contests. Hudson was also tops in digs, leading the way with 11.
Tina Brown (New Braunfels, Tx / Lifegate Christian) and Laura Espinoza (Duncanville, Tx / Duncanville HS), both seniors, were credited with 10 digs apiece. Taylor Calverley (Mansfield, Tx / Grace Prep), who registered 26 assists, had six digs, as did Jessica Sodich (Ovilla, Tx / Ovilla Christian).
Devan Guynes (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS) added five digs as Head Coach Hank Moore had 11 players see court time.
SAGU plays 15th straight road match on Tuesday
The Lady Lions resume playing on Tuesday with a road tilt against Texas Wesleyan University. The rival Rams are 6-9 under the leadership of head coach Christy Clawson .
The teams split two regular season meetings in 2010 before SAGU took the rubber match, 3-2, in the RRAC tournament in Ft. Worth. The contest in the Sid Richardson Center is scheduled for a 7:00pm start time.
