WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University softball team enters the final month of the season with nine doubleheaders remaining on their schedule.
Twelve of the 18 games will be played at the campus ballfield. As the weather warms up, fans have the perfect opportunity to catch some rays while cheering for their classmates.
After posting a 2-28 record in their inaugural campaign in 2012, the Lady Lions went 13-24 last spring. Moving to the Sooner Athletic Conference this year has witnessed an increase in the number of games (54) as well as a more demanding schedule.
Head Coach Tim Grant’s team will go up against their most challenging foes yet when they travel on Thursday to Shawnee, Oklahoma to face No. 13 St. Gregory’s University (28-4 record).
Next week, Tuesday, April 8, SAGU will host the NAIA’s No. 2 ranked team, Oklahoma City University (30-6). The double-dip begins at 2:00pm.
SAGU welcomes the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma in a four-game series, April 11-12. The teams are currently eighth and ninth in the SAC standings.
Over this past weekend the Lady Lions stumbled in a four-game series at Mid-American Christian University (19-11).
In dropping a pair of twinbills, 0-4 and 1-9 on Friday and 1-9 and 0-8 on Saturday, SAGU's record slid to 6-30 overall and their string of losses grew to seventeen.
In a feat of endurance, freshman pitcher Hannah Lee (Hardinsburg, Ky / Breckinridge HS ) went the distance in all four games. She yielded 30 runs, eight of them unearned. SAGU committed just six errors in the series.
Lee walked only two batters in 20 innings while striking out three.
The Lady Lions managed three hits in each of the first three games and four in the finale. MACU pitchers allowed four walks in the four games.
Outfielder Bethany Krock (San Antonio, Tx / Cornerstone Christian istiani) and first baseman Sierra Hankins (Welch, Ok / Welch HS ), who recently joined the team at the end of the basketball season, led the way with three hits apiece.
Third baseman Kelsey Coburn (Lewisville, Tx / Lewisville HS ) had two, both doubles, and scored a run.
Amber Gignac (Houston, Tx / Homeschool) also had two, including a double. Lee went 2-for-2 in the fourth game.
Catcher Heather Wyatt (Lake Jackson, Tx / Brazoswood HS ) had the last hit, a double, and drove in the team’s lone RBI in the third game. Lynnette Riggs (Leupp, Az / Flagstaff HS ), who played second base and in rightfield, scored SAGU’s other run.
