Errors costly as softball team swept by U-of-D
SAGU collects just nine hits; four by Huff, two by Coburn
SAGU plays four-game series in Oklahoma this weekend
IRVING, Texas -- Southwestern Assemblies of God University lost both ends of a twi-night doubleheader to the University of Dallas on Tuesday evening.
The Lady Lions lost the first game by a 6-3 score before being blanked 7-0 in the nightcap. It was their sixth loss in a row, four of them shutouts.
The team will be back in action this weekend when they play at Hillsdale College (Ok) in a pair of twinbills on Friday and Saturday, February 21-22.
GAME ONE: 6-3 loss
The Lady Lions yielded four first inning runs and never recovered. The host Crusaders used a double and a 3-run home run in the rally.
U-of-D tacked on a pair of unearned runs in the fourth. Errors at second base and centerfield enabled what should have been a 1-2-3 inning to become the final nail in a 6-0 lead.
SAGU got on the board in the top of the fifth.
Heather Wyatt (Lake Jackson, Tx / Brazoswood HS ) lined a leadoff double down the rightfield line and raced home when Blayr Huff (Keller, TX / Liberty Christian HS ) singled to left.
Shortstop Amber Gignac (Houston, Tx ) beat out an infield single to third, and, alone with Huff, raced around the bases on a throwing error by the catcher.
The last eight batters in purple were retired in order.
SAGU was outhit 10-5. Huff finished the game with two hits in three trips to the plate. She scored once and had the team’s run batted in.
Hannah Lee (Hardinsburg, Ky / Breckinridge HS ) absorbed the loss for SAGU. She went the distance with three unearned charged to her.
She walked one and struck out six in an effort that likely deserved a better fate.
GAME TWO: 7-0 loss
A similar start sealed the team’s chances. Four infield mistakes proved costly.
Huff was tagged for five quick runs, two of them unearned. She permitted four hits, hit a batter and walked another.
Lee went the last five innings. The freshman was on the hook for a pair of runs, one unearned. She gave up four hits, walked two and struck out two.
The Crusaders kept the Lady Lions on the defensive by stealing eight bases.
U of D’s Katherine Lee hurled a complete game, scattering four hits. She struck out seven and sat down nine more on ground balls.
Huff once again was tops in hits with a 2-for-3 effort. One hit was lined through the hole on the right side of the infield, the other banged to left.
SAGU had a golden opportunity in the top of the first. Two batters got on board on errors and Kelsey Coburn (Lewisville, Tx / Lewisville HS ) singled sharply to left to load the bases with one out.
The ensuing two batters failed to capitalize. A ground ball to the pitcher and a swinging strike out ended the would-be rally. They would not get another chance.
