WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University men’s soccer team heads into the 2013 season with several, clear storylines.
But before the squad takes to the pitch for the start of camp, they will participate in a 4-on-4 tournament fund-raiser this weekend in southeast Dallas. A “Men’s Open,” with teams required to have a minimum of eight players, is slated for August 3.
Nino’s Indoor Soccer (8300 C.F. Hawn Hwy, Dallas 75217) on Highway 175 between Buckner Boulevard and I-20, will host the event, which costs $150 per team.
Proceeds from the tournament will help the Lions obtain needed equipment for training as well as upcoming missions trips according to Coach Oancea (WAHN-cha).
One of the stories to watch is how well a young, rebuilding team comes together as the season develops.
The Lions will field a fresh squad that follows a team that finished 7-11 in 2012. Only a forfeit win late in the season kept SAGU from losing their final six games. Speed and ball skills will be evident this fall, hopefully enough to offset inexperience.
Another issue sure to be priorities will be filling the void left by defender David Flores and top scorer Danny Martinez.
The team held its own on offense, but was prone to defensive breakdowns late in games. SAGU lost five games by the narrowest possible margin.
Ultimately, how Coach Oancea and the players function as a team in responding to the storyline demands will settle yet another test; elevated opposition.
Moving to the Sooner Athletic Conference this year will bring on many new opponents and steeper challenges in competition. The Purple Pride has 10 league games on their 18-game schedule.
Pre-Season Camp begins on August 8
While most other fall sports team report on Monday, August 12, the men’s soccer team will convene four days early.
They will begin their pre-season on August 8 at Lakeview Camp and Conference Center, which is just southwest of Waxahachie. According to the coach, the team will focus the first week on conditioning and technical skills as well as team chemistry.
Special, daily devotional worship time will play an integral part.
The second week, Aug. 12-16, conditioning and technical sessions will yield to tactical instruction.
Finally, as they begin preparing for an exhibition match and their season opener on Aug. 23, the Lions will invest more time and energy on tactical/strategy areas.
Home exhibition set for Aug. 20 vs. Hill College
SAGU will host Hill College on Tuesday, Aug. 20, in an exhibition. The contest will start at 3:00pm on campus. It will be the only chance for fans to catch the team in action prior to their home debut three weeks later on September 9.
The Lions will travel to Houston for their first regular season game on Friday night, Aug. 23. There, they will take on the University of St. Thomas (5-10-1 in 2012) in a 7:00pm contest.
After playing their three previous seasons in pinstriped white jerseys during home games, the Lions will don new, all-white uniforms for home dates.
