Lions announce 2013 soccer schedule
Home agenda includes four ranked foes
Only five of 17 opponents had losing records in 2012
WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University men’s soccer team has released their 2013 schedule and it includes 17 games.
As new members in the 11-team Sooner Athletic Conference, the Lions will play nine league games. Four of the nine will take place on their home pitch.
Head Coach Clementin “Clem” Oancea (WAHN-cha) enters his second year at the helm.
A year ago the Lions dropped their final six contests to go 6-12. It was their last campaign participating in the Red River Athletic Conference.
SAGU has a great challenge in front of them. Just five of 17 opponents had a losing mark in 2012. In fact, the Lions open their itinerary with four straight foes that had a sub .500 team last fall.
The composite record of their opponents is 145-131-30 (W-L-T). The combined mark of their first four enemies is just 17-47-6.
Competition sharply rises down the stretch, evidenced by a 122-74-24 mark over the next eleven matches.
Following a home scrimmage with Hill College (from Hillsboro, Texas) SAGU takes to the road in their initial four games.
Houston's University of St. Thomas (5-10-1) hosts SAGU on Friday, August 23. It is the season debut for both.
Then they take a trip to the Wichita, Kansas area for a pair of games on Aug. 29-30. There, the Lions will meet Southwestern College (1-16-1) in Winfield before trekking 120 miles to tangle with Sterling College (4-13-2) the next afternoon.
A week later they take on the NCAA D3 Louisiana College (7-8-2) in the center of the state on September 7.
The top four returning teams in the Sooner all come to Waxahachie, giving area fans a chance to catch some of the nation’s best teams in action!
The Purple Pride tangles with Oklahoma City University (9-6-4) on Sept. 28, No. 40 ranked Wayland Baptist University (12-4-2) on October 12 and John Brown University (11-5-2) on Oct. 24.
They will entertain the league champions from the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma (14-1-4) on Oct. 29. The Drovers finished the regular season ranked No. 4 in the nation.
SAGU has a couple of interesting match-ups against the top two teams from the RRAC; a home affair against No. 29 ranked Our Lady of the Lake University (12-8-1) and a clash at No. 32 Texas Wesleyan University (9-7-3) in Ft. Worth.
The Lions had two of their home games livestreamed on HD video last autumn by SAGU Sports Live. While the broadcast schedule of the SAGU Sports Network has not been released, the team is hoping for at least two more games aired this year.
Of the nearly 300 institutions that comprise the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), SAGU has been the only school to broadcast their games in legitimate high definition the past three years. SSL also produces home football, volleyball and basketball games.
The Lions report to camp on Monday, Aug. 12, a week after a seven-day service project and community outreach in the South Texas town of Leakey (pronounced LAY-kee).
