Lady Lions Update
Southwestern has played a solid brand of defense in the early stages of the season. They have surrendered just two goals per game since sophomore goalie Haley Shingleton (Pasadena, Tx / Deer Park HS) missed the opener due to an injury.
It's the offense that has yet to get going. They have produced only two goals through four games, struggling like an old lawyer between two fees.
Gloria Lozano (El Paso, Tx / Sorocco HS), a 5’9 defender who has one of those goals, returns after missing the past two contests.
Lions Update
Defeating the Pioneers was made even tougher with the news that two starters are expected to miss the game; Danny Martinez (Houston, Tx / Cy-Creek HS) and James Swearingin (Arlington, Tx / Home School).
Martinez leads the Purple Pride in scoring with five goals and an assist. Currently, he leads the Red River Athletic Conference in goals and points while ranking #23 in the NAIA in goals. The senior forward was a national nominee for Player of the Week (last week) in the National Christian College Athletic Association.
The Lions began the season ranked #13 in the NCCAA’s pre-season poll of the 60 teams in the organization. They have slipped out of the Top 15 with a pair of one-goal defeats.
Wayland has outscored their opponents by a 9-1 count and figure to be huge hurdle on the road for SAGU.
For more on the team, read the interview today with Assistant Coach, Alex Vazquez. The story will be posted this afternoon.
SAGU will play at home this Saturday, September 15, when the University of Houston at Victoria comes to town. The women’s game starts at 2:00pm, the men at 4:00pm.
