Pair of home soccer scrimmages today
SAGU takes on Hill College at 3, 5pm
Men's Lions ranked #13 in NCCAA poll
WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- This afternoon both the women’s and men’s soccer teams from Southwestern Assemblies of God University will host scrimmages on their home pitch against Hill College.
The Lady Lions will meet the Lady Rebels at 1:00pm. The Lions are set to tangle with the two-year community college, based in Hillsboro, Texas, at 3:00pm. The game does not count in the teams’ records.
Southwestern’s field is located adjacent to, and north of the Sheaffer Center. Admission is free to the general public.
Both SAGU teams opened the 2012 season on the road last week. Travelling to Oklahoma City, Mid-America Christian University shutout the Lady Lions, 5-0, and the Lions, 1-0, the latter in double overtime.
The Lady Evangels, coming off 16-4-1 and 12-7-1 seasons, extended a 2-0 lead at the break with three more to clinch the outcome. SAGU was outshot by a 22-5 count; 12-4 in shots on goal.
The Evangels, 2-12-3 a year ago, split two games with Southwestern, taking the season opener in 2011 as well. The Lions dominated the possession game and held a 19-14 edge in shots. Several blasts hit the post or crossbar, and another ricocheted off the MACU goalie’s face.
Mid-America scored in the second OT on a long kick by their goalie that bounded past the Lions backline. It allowed a breakaway score in the 104th minute.
SAGU entertains Sterling College at home on Saturday
Team Lioness has Sterling College (Ks) on tap for Saturday, at home, at 1:00pm. The Lady Warriors have won 17 games over the past two seasons. Currently 0-0-0, Sterling will play twice on the road before coming to Waxahachie.
SC will play Central College on Tuesday in McPherson, Kansas, and then will be at Dallas Christian
College on Friday at 3:00pm.
The SAGU men also face Sterling on Saturday at 3:00pm. The Warriors, who will be at Dallas Christian the day before at 5pm, were 3-14-1 last fall.
Southwestern will play their first-ever broadcast game on Saturday, Sept. 8, at home versus Louisiana College (NCAA Div. III).
