Knights rally late for 3-2 soccer win
Lions had 2-0 lead after 64 minutes
CEDAR HILL, Texas -- Southwestern Assemblies of God University built a 2-0 lead with twenty-six minutes to play, but couldn’t hold it as Northwood University came from behind for a 3-2 Thursday win in men’s soccer. The Knights scored the game-winner with 7:23 remaining.
Northwood (3-4 overall, 1-0 in RRAC) rallied to knot things at 2-2 with goals in a five-minute time span as the SAGU defense yielded their hard-fought lead. Jorge Martinez booted the winner at the 82:37 mark of the ninety-minute match, getting assists from Julio Prieto and their goalie, Brad Wood.
In the Red River Athletic Conference opener for both teams, SAGU went tooth-and-nail with the favored Knights.
The game was scoreless until junior forward Danny Martinez (Houston, Tx / Cy-Creek HS) netted his sixth goal in seven games, thanks to an assist from David A. Flores (San Miguel, El Salvador / R.L. Turner HS). The tally came after 62:34 of nil and zip scoring.
Alex Vazquez (Waxahachie, Tx / Midwestern State Univ), a 5-foot-7 senior, sent a shot past the keeper into the left corner for a 2-0 advantage just 1:07 after the ice-breaker by Martinez. Only 26:27 was left on the clock.
Northwood regrouped with a flurry of shots down the stretch. Three times they beat the Lions defense with three goals in a span of 15:08, taking the lead for good with 6:44 remaining.
They outshot the Lions 22-17, with Martinez firing eight for SAGU. Cesar Galvan (Dallas, Tx / Lovejoy HS) made a dozen saves for the gold-clad Lions.
SAGU’s record slid to 2-4-2. They are 0-1 in the Red River.
