PREVIEWS of both games
WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- The Sooner Athletic Conference begins to pick up steam this weekend when ten of the eleven teams, including Southwestern Assemblies of God University, play league games on Saturday.
The Lady Lions, 7-7 overall and 1-3 in SAC games, will meet their third consecutive opponent with a losing record when they take to the Sheaffer Center court at 3:00pm (CST).
University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma (3-4 / 2-2) and SAGU enter the game as the lowest scoring clubs in the SAC. The Drovers average 59, the Lady Lions score 62 ppg.
Should SAGU’s defense, third in the league, lasso the Drovers, they stand a chance to cap a 2-1 week.
The Lady Lions are led by guards Nia Winston (Garland, Tx / Lakeview Centennial HS , Panola JC) and Taylor Hill (Waxahachie, Tx / Waxahachie HS ). Winston is atop the SAC in scoring at 17.5 ppg.
USAO offers three guards in double figures; Rashelle Carr (13.0), Sami Martin (12.8) and Paige Pulliam (10.4).
Approximately twenty minutes later the men’s are set to tip it off at 5:00pm.
No. 2 ranked SAGU (11-1 / 4-0) and USAO (5-6 / 2-2) get together for the first time since they met in the opening round in the NAIA tournament last March.
The Drovers led throughout the game, extending a 28-23 halftime lead to ten, at 40-30, with fifteen minutes to play. SAGU reeled off the next ten points to get back in the game.
Trailing 55-53 (5:23 to play), the Lions clamped down on defense and Tyler Guidry (Houston, Tx / Westbury Christian ) and Emmanuel Adoyi (Little Rock, Ark / LR Parkview HS ) scored critical points in a 9-3 finish. Final: Lions 62-58.
Jahseth Lloyd led the Drovers in points (11) and rebounds (8).
Lloyd is back in green and gold and the 6’7 forward is netting 21 ppg.
The teams match-up well, statistically, with both excelling beyond the arc and at the foul line.
SAGU’s has a big edge in defense, where they allow foes to make just .400 of their shots. That leads the Sooner. USAO is last, permitting their opponents to connect on .484 of their attempts.
The Drovers counter with five guards scoring near ten points or more. Three of them stand 6’3 or 6’4.
Guards Dominique Rambo (Dallas, Tx / Trinity Chr CH, Ok Wesleyan Univ ), Caleb Gentry (Hondo, Tx / Hondo HS, Ok Wesleyan Univ ) and Daniel Mills (Belton, Tx / Belton HS ) are scoring 27.5, 15.0 and nine ppg, while a pair of junior forwards; Jonathan Walter (Garland, Tx / Garland HS ) and Caleb Feemster (Addison, Tx / Trinity Chr-Addison, Ranger College ) are have great seasons.
Feemster has 35 triples, pumps in 15.1 ppg and tops Team Purp with 8.3 rebounds per outing.
Walter is as smooth as a gun barrel with 17.0 ppg and 5.3 rpg. He is ripping the nets at a 55% success rate, including 43% from long distance.
Off to their best start ever, the Lions can move to 5-0 in the SAC with a win.
In a key, early season encounter, Wayland Baptist University (11-2 / 2-1 in SAC) hosts second place Mid-America Christian University (8-3 / 4-1) at 3:00pm.
