(Entire Poll posted below)

guidry-drives-baseline-vs-geogetownWAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  The first edition of the 2013-14 NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Coaches’ Top 25 was announced on Tuesday, and Southwestern Assemblies of God University rose from No. 5 in the preseason poll to a tie at No.3.

SAGU and Pikeville College (Ky) were even in voting points with 233. The Bears are 7-1 and had one of the ten first place votes.

UPike was 26-7 last year before losing to LSU-Shreveport, 91-87, in the opening round of the NAIA tournament.

Ranked No. 1 is Columbia College (Mo), who are 8-0. They collected eight first place votes. The Cougars went 35-0 last winter until falling to LSU-Shreveport as well, 79-78.

Sliding to No. 2 are the defending champions from Georgetown College (Ky). The Tigers (one first place vote) are 9-1 following a 119-109 loss to then-No. 23 Life University (Ga).

The national runner-up, SAGU, 33-5 a year ago, won their first five games this season. That included an 83-72 victory over then-No.2 LSU-Shreveport.

Two weeks later the Lions fell at LSUS, 84-75. SAGU trailed 72-71 with 5:06 remaining.

A year ago it took until late in the season before the Lions could crack the Top 10.

The Sooner Athletic Conference has three teams in the Top 25. After SAGU is John Brown University (10-0) at No. 7 and St. Gregory’s University (8-1) at No. 19.

Two others received votes but are outside the Top 25.

Mid-America Christian University (6-1) appears at No. 30 with 23 points. Wayland Baptist University (5-1) is No. 34 with three points.

Head Coach Donnie Bostwick’s squad has one more game before Christmas. On Monday, December 16, they entertain Arlington Baptist College at 8:00pm.

SAGU’s first game next semester is on January 2 when they travel to play No. 30 MACU. Two nights later the Lions host Oklahoma Baptist University, who began the season tied with LSUS at No. 2.
