SAC Coaches pick Lions to finish second
Oklahoma Baptist voted as the team beat
SAGU hosts OBU on Jan. 4 in broadcast biggie
WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- The head coaches in the Sooner Athletic Conference picked Oklahoma Baptist University as the favorite men’s basketball team this season. The voting, however, was a close as the pennies in your pocket.
The Bison, who had a 25-8 won-lost record last winter, received six of the eleven first-place votes. Coaches could not vote for their own team.
OBU totaled 94 of the maximum 110 points.
Southwestern Assemblies of God University, 33-5, were a close second with 92 points. They drew four first-place votes.
The Lions were the Red River Athletic Conference regular season champs last season.
John Brown University (Ark), the defending regular season champion, racked up 83 points, good enough to rank third. The Golden Eagles had the other first place vote. They had a 28-7 mark a year ago.
Oklahoma City University was the pick at No. 4. The Stars peaked late in the spring and shined brightly while winning the SAC tournament. They finished seventh during the regular season, and then caught fire.
(The entire poll is posted below)
Most of the teams are just now beginning their 20-game conference season.
All games scheduled for today, Thursday, have been postponed due to an arriving winter storm.
SAGU will play at Southwestern Christian University on Saturday afternoon, weather permitting. The game will be played in Bethany, a western suburb of Oklahoma City.
The Lions first home SAC game will be a very important one. On Thursday, January 4, they host Oklahoma Baptist at 8:00pm.
Played during the holiday break, the game will tipoff the SAGU Sports Live schedule of home games aired in HD on-line.
It will also be the first with The Jungle student section moved across the court on the same side as the Lions bench. It is a “can’t miss” biggie to kickoff the league season.
