SAGU men's basketball roster announced
Three starters will return, along with a deep cast
Lions open the season at home on Tuesday at 8:00pm
WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- In his first year as Head Coach at Southwestern Assemblies of God University two years ago, Donnie Bostwick’s squad won 27 games, fifteen more than the Lions won in 2011.
They finished third in the National Christian College Athletic Association's national tourney in Indiana.
The encore was also a smash hit, going 33-5 and advancing all the way to the NAIA national championship game.
While fans savor the team's flair at delivering in close games, especially they sank three-point baskets or punctuated games with thunderous dunk, observers knew the team's real strength.
The Lions intensity on defense (sixth nationally in field goal defense at 38%), quickness, diving for loose balls and crashing the offensive boards (fourth in the NAIA with 15.6 per game) were second to the team's closeness and spiritual unity.
This year’s team will be replacing two 6-foot-5 starters, Nathaniel “Duce” Ward and Mike Nwelue. Ward was a senior while Nwelue (pronounced like dwell-way) transferred to Drury University (to pursue a medical degree), who won the NCAA D2 title last year.
The other members of the line-up will be back; guard Caleb Gentry (Hondo, Tx / Hondo HS, Ok Wesleyan Univ), point guard Dominique Rambo (Dallas, Tx / Trinity Christian - Cedar Hill, Okla. Wesleyan Univ) and guard-forward Jonathan Walter (Garland, Tx / Garland HS).
Coach Bostwick (180-36 in six years; .833) will invest the first semester of this season developing the team’s chemistry, rotations and depth.
The Lions roster has 17 players; four seniors, seven juniors, three sophomores and three freshmen.
They breakdown into positions; seven guards, four wings, six forwards.
Gentry and Rambo will return, as will Reid Brunner (Halletsville, Tx / Halletsville HS), Adam Martinez (Mansfield, Tx / Mansfield HS) and lefthander Tyler Guidry (Houston, Tx / Westbury Christian).
Two new additions are transfers; Andrew Erskine (Houston Tx / Centenary College) and 6'3 Andre Crear (Ft Worth, Tx / Trimble Tech HS, Angelina College).
The guard/forwards can play the ‘3’ and/or the ‘4.’ Two were regulars a year ago; 6'4 Clayton O’Neill (Halletsville, Tx / Halletsville HS) and Walter.
Caleb Feemster (Addison, Tx / Trinity Chr-Addison, Ranger College), a 6'6 wing, played at SAGU two years ago, transferred to Ranger College, and has come back.
The other is 6'5 freshman Daniel Mills (Belton, Tx / Belton HS).
Three are a trio of incumbents; 6'5 Ben Starks (Austin, Tx / Omaha Bryan HS, Southeastern CC) and 6'4 Maurice “Mo” Oglesby (Arlington, Tx / Zion Academy) and 6'5 Emmanuel Adoyi (Little Rock, Ark / LR Parkview HS).
Adoyi (pronounced like 'a toy'), a defensive master inside, was named the Red River Athletic Conference's Sixth Man of the Year as a freshman.
Of the three remaining, two new arrivals are freshmen, the other transferred from Southwestern Christian College (Terrell, Tx). They consist of;
Six-foot-5 Chase Davis (Garland, Tx / Garland Christian) and 6'8 Remington Mitchell (Mansfield, Tx / Mansfield HS).
Karor (kah-ROAR) Gumwell (Victoria, Australia / Victoria Christian, Southwestern CC), at 6'7, could be an X-factor when he suits up as a junior.
Team Notes: 'As Good as Gold'
The Lions will don new home uniforms, featuring gold tank tops and short with purple trim.
Working with Bostwick will be veteran Assistant Coaches Garrett Jones and Kyle Tucker.
Back for a second trip is Missionary David Leatherberry, the team’s chaplain. His role is a valuable one and a source of strength.
Home Opener on Tuesday night
Expect to see the line-up in flux during the first ten games. The season kicks into high gear in January.
SAGU opens the season on Tuesday, November 5, when Dallas Christian College visits the Sheaffer Center. The “Texas Snowstorm” begins at 8:00pm (CST).
