NCCAA selects Rambo as Nat'l P.O.W.
Junior playmaker was big in the clutch
Scored winning points in two cliff-hangers
WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- Southwestern Assemblies of God University junior guard Dominique Rambo was named the National Player of the Week by the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA).
He was also chosen the P.O.W. in the Red River Athletic Conference a week ago.
He scored the deciding points in both of the Lions games a week ago.
SAGU had rallied from a 60-49 deficit to take a 71-68 lead against Langston University, who then netted an equalizing triple with 12 seconds remaining.
Eschewing a timeout, the Lions allowed Rambo (Dallas, Tx / Oklahoma Wesleyan Univ., Trinity Christian School) to create something on the offensive end.
He approached the arc, passed up a jumper, then knifed inside the lane and was fouled just as it appeared he would make an easy layup. He connected on a pair of free throws with four seconds to go.
SAGU added two more foul shots and won the game, 75-71.
Then he donned a cape in the closing seconds when Texas Wesleyan University visited the Sheaffer Center.
After leading by nine points, SAGU watched the Rams hit a three-pointer to knot the score (87-87) with twenty seconds left on the clock.
While teammates cleared out, Rambo dribbled towards the arc from the right side. Looking as if he would penetrate as he did in the Langton game, he suddenly stopped and fired a fade-away trey.
It ripped the nets and the Rams’ hearts with four ticks on the clock. SAGU won 90-87.
In two games he averaged 24.5 ppg, 3.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and a whopping 7.0 steals per game.
He made 15 of 36 shots (.417), 5 of 16 three-pointers (.313) and 14 of 17 free throws (.824).
While his numbers weren’t other-worldly, when the outcome of two games was in doubt, he was the difference maker!
He leads SAGU in scoring at 17.4 ppg.
