SAGU Sports Update: NCCAA National Championship

Southwestern Assemblies of God University goes to NCCAA National ChampionshipWaxahachie, TexasMarch 13, 2012Southwestern Assemblies of God University’s (SAGU) men’s basketball team earned an at-large bid to attend the National Christian College Athletic Association’s (NCCAA) Division I National Championship at Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana, March 14-17.

In the NCCAA Regional Tournament, SAGU defeated Colorado Christian University, 68-61, on March 8, 2012. In the championship game, the team played Dallas Baptist University (#1 seed). After falling behind by 15 points in the second half, the Lions fought to within 80-78 with a minute to play following a tip-in by Duce Ward. SAGU lost 80-87. Although the Lions didn’t win the game, their 25-10 record earned them an at-large bid for Nationals.

SAGU’s 25-10 won-lost record is their best since joining the NAIA in the late 1990s. The season has seen them ranked nationally by the NAIA as well as being in the NCCAA’s Top 10.

SAGU’s (#4 seed) first game of the tournament will be against The Master’s College (#5 seed) on Wednesday, March 14, at 2:30 p.m. (CST). Should the Lions win, they will play on Thursday, March 15, at 7:45 p.m. (CST) against the winner of the #1 Cedarville University (20-9).
