Rambo, Horne, Feemster honored by RRAC
NAIA tournament has trio of Red River teams
WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- During the recently completed Red River Athletic Conference tournament, three members of the Southwestern Assemblies of God University men’s basketball team were named to the All-Tournament Team.
A panel of attending Sports Information Directors, overseen by the RRAC’s Darren David, voted for the top twelve players at the three-day event. SAGU served as the league host for the tourney.
SID's from Texas College, Our Lady of the Lake University, Texas Wesleyan and SAGU voted in the ATT process.
Dominique Rambo (Dallas, Tx / Oklahoma Wesleyan, Trinity Christian School), Ronald Horne (Waco, Tx / Univ. of N.Texas, Waco HS) and Caleb Feemster (Addison, Tx / Trinity Christian Academy) were selected among a group of twelve players.
Feemster led the trio in scoring, averaging 14.0 points per game in the Lions’ two games. Rambo netted 13.0 and Horne tossed in 9.5 ppg.
A 6’5 freshman guard, Feemster hit 8-of-17 shots including four triples and all eight of his free throws. He was the only SAGU player to reach double-figures in both games.
Rambo bounced back from a three-point effort against St. Thomas to pour in 23 against Our Lady of the Lake. 'Bo swished 10-of-22 shots while averaging four assists in the two contests.
Horne, the senior heart of the Lions, knocked down 6-of-11 shots while averaging 22 minutes a game.
Among Southwestern performers who did not make the team, Nathaniel Duce Ward (Waco, Tx / Univ. of N.Texas, Connally HS) averaged 13.5 ppg as the squad’s #2 scorer in the tournament.
Craig Grigsby (Houston, Tx / Glenda Dawson HS) was fourth at 10.5 while Mike Nwelue (Lewisville, Tx / Lewisville HS) netted 8.0 ppg. Grigsby nailed 8-of-12 shots.
The Lions (23-9) finished in a tie for third with Texas Wesleyan University (25-7). LSU-Shreveport (25-7), who has won seven consecutive conference tournaments, the last two in the RRAC, topped Our Lady of the Lake University (26-7) in the final, 111-101.
It was the first time this season the Halos scored 100 points and lost. They lead the nation in scoring and are 16-1when they eclipse the century mark.
NAIA Tournament includes Saints, Pilots, Rams
For the first time in RRAC history, three teams have received a berth in the NAIA’s 32-team tournament in Kansas City.
No. 7 ranked OLLU and #12 LSU-Shreveport received automatic bids for winning the regular season and the post-season tournament, respectively, while #19 TWU entered with an at-large invitation.
Southwestern narrowly missed their second-ever berth in the NAIA tourney. The 2006 team remains the school's lone representitive in the big event. One more victory may have gotten the Lions into the field.
Wesleyan drew #16 Point Loma Nazarene (Cal) (20-9) at 12:30pm (CST) while the OLLU Saints will face Baker University (Kan) (21-11) at 6:15pm, both on Wednesday, March 14.
LSUS has a Thursday morning meeting with cross-state foe, Xavier University (La) (23-8). They will tip it off at 9:00am (CST).
To win the NAIA championship, a team must claim five victories in six days during the March 14-20 event held at the Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri.
Celebrating their 75th anniversary, the NAIA bills their version of March Madness as the toughest tournament anywhere.
The NCAA's 64-team playoff covers three weekends while the NAIA hoopfest is crammed into one site over six days. Teams get one day off at the start, then play daily until a champion is crowned.
Fellow Assemblies of God member, Evangel University (Mo) (23-9), will face #8 Lindsey Wilson (Ky) (21-9) on Wednesday at 2:15pm in the NAIA tournament.
