Lions reappear in NAIA Coaches Poll
Rout of OLLU sparks return to Top 45
Team also rated #11 in NCCAA
WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University men's basketball team is back among the group of colleges receiving votes in the weekly NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll. The 106-80 rout of former #5 ranked Our Lady of the Lake University propelled them towards future consideration at #32 with 13 votes.
Head Coach Donnie Bostwick had them as high as #27 earlier in the season following a 9-0 start. The most votes they have garnered from the twelve-coach panel was 50.
The Red River Athletic Conference has three teams currently in the Top 25 in Our Lady of the Lake at #7, Texas Wesleyan University at #12 and LSU-Shreveport at #18. The trio all made the grade recently, after LSUS thumped OLLU at home, 83-74.
It is the first time in the history of the league that three members appeared in the Top 25 simultaneously.
The University of St. Thomas (Houston) and SAGU are in the Receiving Votes category, giving the RRAC five representitives.
Southwestern has five contests left to be played, three of them at home. Only of the five has a losing mark, giving the Lions four opponents with good records. Each presents a prime opportunity to move up in the polls.
Red River Tournament, March 2-3, 5
The top eight teams in the RRAC qualify to play in the post-season tournament. The quarterfinals will be on Friday, March 2; semi-finals on March 3, while the finals are set for Monday, March 5. All games will take place at SAGU.
The championship games for the women's and men's finals will be broadcast in HD on SAGU Sports Live, thanks to the sponsorship of Waxahachie's Chicken Express.
SAGU Lions are #11 in the NCCAA
Southwestern is rated #11 in this week's Burbridge System, which also considers strength of schedule. There are about 65 schools in Division I of the National Christian College Athletic Association. The Top 15 are posted below the NAIA's Coaches Poll.
Dallas Baptist University, who are members in the NCAA's Division II, are the top rated team in the Central Region. The Patriots are ahead of #2 SAGU and #3 Mid-America Christian University (Okla).
If the Lions do not earn a berth in the 32-team NAIA national tournament, the team would enter the NCCAA's Central Regional during March 7-10. It is a single-elimination event hosted by Colorado Christian University in Lakewood, a Denver suburb of 145,000.
The winner advances to form an 8-team field at Nationals, March 14-17. That event, where teams are guaranteed three games, will be played at Grace College in Winona Lake in northern Indiana.
