High-energy event tips-off hoops season
WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- The fun-filled craze that sweeps the nation this time of year, the advent of the coming basketball season, commences with the annual Midnight Madness event.
For the third consecutive October, the ‘Madness” comes to the campus of Southwestern Assemblies of God University. This Thursday night, October 27, in the Sheaffer Center, it officially starts when the doors open at 11:30pm.
Jaroy Carpenter and Will Perry will serve as high-energy emcees for Midnight Madness, which is organized by new cheerleaders coach Alicia Rogers.
Included in the 75-minute program will be a special routine by the SAGU Cheer Team, followed by the Southwestern Jazz Band’s live introduction of both the Lady Lions and Lions basketball teams. Players from the two squads will have competitions in shooting free throws and three-pointers before the main event, the Slam Dunk contest.
The Madness will end after selected students will try their hand at shooting half-court shots for prizes.
Since the occasion ends after curfew, instructions will be given for attendees to receive a curfew pass prior to students returning to
their dorms.
Sponsors for this year’s Midnight Madness will provide food, drinks and/or prizes; Chicken Express, Chick-fil-A, Dominos and the Assemblies of God Credit Union.
Midnight Madness started at SAGU thanks to the vision, planning and energy of former Cheer Team head coach Beverly Robinson. She was the catalyst who paved the way for the popular event.
