SAGU football rises in NCCAA rankings
Victory Bowl announces 2013 participants
SAGU (5-4) hosts Bacone College (7-3) in 6pm finale on Saturday
WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- Winning three consecutive games has given the football team from Southwestern Assemblies of God University reason to finish strong in the season's final weekend.
Sails filled with the winds of their best play of the year, the Lions are assured of their first non-losing season.
SAGU has assembled a string of victories; 42-35 over Oklahoma Panhandle State University (NCAA D2), 26-21 over Wayland Baptist University and 38-15 over Texas College.
The last two triumphs were on the road, lifted the Lions record to 4-1 in away games.
At 5-4, the Lions entertain Bacone College (Ok) this Saturday, November 16. The Warriors are 7-3 after a heart-breaking 39-37 loss at home to Langston University (5-4).
The contest will be played at Lumpkins Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6:00pm (CST).
SAGU is a dual member of both the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA).
The latter has members from the NAIA and the the NCAA Division 2 and D3.
The Lions are currently third in the Central States Football League (of the NAIA). Standings at: http://www.centralstatesfootball.com/
SAGU is fourth in the NCCAA's field of 19 teams. The top two (who aren't playing in the playoffs) receive a bid to play in the Victory Bowl on Nov. 23 in Rome, Georgia (northwest of Atlanta).
NCCAA Announces Victory Bowl Participants:
One new team and salty veteran will square off in this month's Victory Bowl. The NCCAA announced today (Nov. 12), that Greenville College and Azusa Pacific University will play in the post-season final.
The Cougars (9-1) will be making their first appearance in the game while the Greenville Panthers (8-2) are back for a sixth time.
SAGU hurt their chances with an 0-2 start, falling at home to Bethany College and Howard Payne University, who are 2-8 and 4-5 this season.
The Lions also lost at Austin College (4-5 this fall) and at home to No. 22 ranked Langston University (5-4).
