Women's Soccer still in RRAC race

Lady Lions have key home dates this week

BROWNSVILLE, Texas  --  Facing two teams who were tied for first place in the league in three days was a bit of a challenge for an improving women’s soccer team from Southwestern Assemblies of God University.

Two days after a high-water mark in a thrilling 1-0 triumph over Our Lady of the Lake University on Thursday, the team was on the short end of a 6-0 loss to University of Texas at Brownsville.

The Lady Scorpions are riding high at 9-3 overall and own a 7-0 mark in the Red River Athletic Conference. They have won nine games in a row.

In amassing a perfect ledger against the RRAC, they have yet to allow a single goal while scoring 44. Including a 1-0 triumph over Belhaven University (Jackson, Ms), the Stingers have eight consecutive shutouts, tops in the nation.

SAGU’s string of three straight wins came to a close, but not without showing the maturation and potential of the young program. Facing UTB revealed there is still work to be done.

The Lady Lions managed three shots against the grudging Arachnids, who fired 31 themselves, 18 of them on goal. Only a good effort by the Purple Pride and goalie Haley Shingleton (Pasadena, Tx / Deer Park HS), who had a dozen saves, kept the score within sight.

“Our team continues to stick together,” said second year Head Coach Mandy Fortner. “We work together and the team battles everyone with passion. The game is not about individuals. It’s all about the team.”

“I’m very proud of this group,” she continued. “We’re playing our best soccer when it counts the most.”

The Lady Scorpions, with Isadora Freitas and Nelleke Smits netting two goals apiece, defeated Huston-Tillotson University (11-0) and Bacone College (6-0) in their most recent outings. Smits leads the RRAC in goals (13).

The Scorpions goals were within the box on low crosses to the back post or on shots following through-balls (passes) that they finished well, according to Coach Fortner.

Sophomore forward Amy Lambdin (Stockton, Calif / Elliot Christian) carried on her developing role as a scoring threat. Her persistence resulted in all three of the team's attempts.

Next Saturday marks the showdown between UTB and Northwood University (10-3-1, 6-0-1 in RRAC), in a game played in nearby Cedar Hill at 3pm.

"Great team win for us but what is very important is that we are playing with energy, finishing chances, and playing exciting soccer." said UTB Head Coach Nik Barjaktarevic. "A lot of things that we are working on and talking about are coming together."

Lady Lions at home Thursday, Saturday

Southwestern is tied for sixth in the Red River and are fighting for their first-ever berth in the conference tournament next month.

Team Lioness has three games left in the regular season, two of them at home this week.

Thursday, October 18, the Lions will entertain Texas Wesleyan University (7-5-2, 4-2-1 in RRAC) at 3:00pm.

Next Saturday is the home finale against New Mexico’s University of the Southwest (3-7-1, 3-4 in RRAC) at noon.

It will be Senior Saturday and Parents Day in a match will also be broadcast by SAGU Sports Live.

Rob Price and Tim Roberts will supply the play-by-play and color, with Bianca Alarcon adding interviews and sideline coverage. The pre-game show starts at 11:45am (CST).

Jessica Powell-Roman (Terrell, Tx / Terrell HS) is the squad’s only senior. She will be honored prior to the game.

Southwestern will wrap up the regular season on October 27 in the state capital against HTU.

The Lady Lions, after a 1-8 start, have won four of their last six games. They have outscored the opposition in that span, 14-8, including the six goals on Saturday.
