Women's Soccer blanked, 3-0, by UMHB
SAGU shuts-out the Lady Cru in first half
Next: Our Lady of the Lake next Saturday, 2:00pm
BELTON, Texas -- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University women’s soccer team held unbeaten University of Mary Hardin-Baylor scoreless on the road in the first half behind a solid defensive effort. But it wasn’t enough as the Lady Crusaders broke the game open en route to a 3-0 win on Saturday night.
In front of a crowd of 450, SAGU held their own with hustle and resistance. The Lady Lions improved midfield enabled them to control the ball and pace of play while limiting shots by UMHB.
The Cru ended the stalemate with two lightning quick scores coming out of the locker room.
Kristen Hoelscher, a 5’6 freshman forward, connected just thirty seconds into the second stanza. Her unassisted goal swung momentum entirely in the hands of the hosts.
They continued to apply the pressure as Kathryn Parker, their leading scorer (4 goals), sailed her attempt wide just two minutes later.
Freshman midfielder Allison Porter gave the Lady Cru a commanding 2-0 lead in the 48th minute, chasing SAGU goalie Haley Shingleton (Deer Park, Tx / Deer Park HS). She made seven saves before the bang-bang scores decided the match.
Shingleton then moved to the offensive end to help boost the attack.
Meanwhile, the defensive minded Mary-Hardin-Baylor permitted only two shots by SAGU, none by the starting unit.
Sophomore Kenzie McNutt (DeSoto, Tx / Ovilla Christian) and Shingleton, a junior, were credited with shots, their first of the season.
The Crusaders out-fired SAGU by a 19-2 margin, eleven on goal. In fact, they have a 71-35 advantage in shots through four games.
Later they converted a well-placed corner kick from Sarah Kopp. Porter bonked the assist into the back of the net with a header 61:02 into the match.
From there UMHB (4-0) circled the wagons and denied SAGU a single shot after intermission. Their defensive prowess; they allowed just 22 goals in 16 games last year and only three in their four games this season, is what the Cru does best.
SAGU, now 1-4, returns to the pitch next weekend when Our Lady of the Lake University visits Waxahachie.
The contest is slated for Saturday, September 21, in a 2:00pm (CST) start.
It will be broadcast in HD by SAGU Sports Live. Pre-game coverage begins fifteen minutes before the kickoff.
OLLU is 4-0-1 and will provide stiff competition. They look to avenge the Lady Lions’ huge 1-0 upset in 2012. Jessica Powell-Roman (Terrell, Tx / Terrell HS) scored in the 89th minute in San Antonio.
