SAGU battled #5 Rogers State twice

Purple Pride has 5 home games this week

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  The non-conference, early season schedule continued over the weekend with the Southwestern Assemblies of God University baseball team picking up a shutout win after a pair of tough setbacks.

SAGU, now 4-4, blanked Arlington Baptist College, 9-0 on Saturday at the Waxahachie Sports Complex.

The Lions were swept by Rogers State University, 15-8 on Friday and 9-2 on Saturday. Ranked no. 5 in the NAIA, the Hillcats (4-0) also took two from Arlington Baptist, 12-1 and 17-7.

Rogers State finished last season as the no. 2 ranked team in the nation with a 49-16 won-lost record.

Freshman Jarrod Pisors (Dallas, Tx / Red Oak HS) tossed a seven-hit, complete game shutout in a 9-0 whitewashing of the Patriots. The 6-foot-7 right-hander fanned two and did not issue a walk.

Pisors (PY-surz) twice allowed a runner to reach third; in the first and fourth. He got the third out in the first inning on a fly ball to Nick Cox (Lufkin, Tx / Lufkin HS) in left, and then escaped a one-out jam in the fourth.

Ground outs to Micah Thompson (Waco, Tx / Gatesville HS) at second and to shortstop Jacob Spivey (Georgetown, Tx / Harker Heights HS), each firing to first baseman Rusty Hensel (Maypearl, Tx / Dallas Christian College, Maypearl HS) to protect the shutout.

Pisors buckled down and the Pats were to strand eight base runners.

Key plays by the defense started with a 3-6 double play in the second, with Hensel snaring a liner, then nailing a runner at second.

With one out in the second and two runners on base, Enrique Rodriguez (Ft. Worth, Tx / Nolan HS) gloved a line drive smash to third, and then Pisors retired the next batter on a fielder’s choice to Spivey.

Then, in the sixth, ABC had two runners aboard, both on errors at third. Pisors scooped up a ground shot up the middle to end the uprising.

He faced just three batters in second and seventh, picking up the win with a well-pitched game. Pisors had good control and put his trust in his defense.

SAGU scored solo runs in the first and third before the Purple and Gold broke the game open with a 4-spot fourth. Tacking on three in the sixth insured the Lions victory.

Freshman designated hitter Billy Mee (Fayetteville, NC / Copperas Cove HS) and junior catcher Jared Denton (Mission, Tx / Sharyland HS) led a 13-hit Lions attack.

Mee rapped three singles in four trips to the plate and scored twice. Denton went 3-for-3. He ripped two doubles, drove in one run and swiped two bases.

Spivey and Hensel each contributed two hits apiece.

Denton singled to right to score Mee in the first, and Spivey’s RBI hit drove in Thompson, who had tripled on an 0-2 pitch to deep left in the third frame.

Denton doubled in the fourth and zoomed home on a two-base blast to leftfield by Rockie Davis (Santa Fe, Tx / Santa Fe HS) gave Team Purp a two-run advantage.

Denton and Davis crushed doubles to right and left in the fourth. Cox sent an RBI single to left before Rodriguez and Thompson walked to load the bases.

Spivey, the sophomore pivot, jumped on an 0-1 offering, powering it to deep right-center. It scored two-runs for a 6-0 lead.

Southwestern put game out of reach with three more in the sixth.

Rodriguez and Spivey opened with walks. Mee lined an RBI hit to right, and Hensel duplicated the feat when he stroked a 2-0 pitch down the first base line for an 8-0 lead.

Junior co-captain Denton capped the scoring with a long double to left.

Through eight games the Lions have scored 49 and yielded 53.

Five home games this week

The Lions hope to capitalize on the triumph when they play host to five games this week.

On Tuesday the team welcomes Dallas Christian College to the Waxahachie Sports Complex for a 2:00pm doubleheader. The Crusaders are 1-2 after hosting Central Christian College (Ks) for a weekend series.

CCC won the first two games on Friday, 13-12 and 15-6. Dallas Christian avoided a sweep when they scored two first inning runs and made them hold up for a 2-1 win on Saturday.

The Lions will meet Kansas Wesleyan University for a three-game set next weekend. It will be the start of the season for the Coyotes, who enjoyed a 34-22 season last spring.

Hillcats tame Lions

Against Rogers State on Friday, the Lions surrendered eight runs in the top of the first inning, and had few answers for the perennial powerhouse until they had fallen behind, 14-2.

Costly errors against last year’s national runner-up greased an already potent offense. The Hillcats do not need the help.

SAGU did manage to score five in the fifth during a 15-8 defeat.

Denton was the only batter in purple with more than one base hit. His 2-for-4 effort included an RBI triple in the seventh. The Lions totaled eight hits to go along with five walks and two hit batsmen.

Cox, Montana Chitty (Lake Worth, Tx / Lake Worth HS) and Skyler Gilstrap (Smithville, Tx / Smithville HS) pitched for SAGU, with Cox absorbing the loss.

SAGU fared much better on Saturday morning.

Hayden Killebrew (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS) held the ‘Cats to a lone single and zero runs until the fourth. Then, two critical errors paved the way for five runs.

SAGU drew to within 5-2 when they racked up two runs in their half of the fifth.

A single and a stolen base by Chitty preceded a monster blast to left by Davis for an RBI triple. He came home on a single to left off the bat of Spivey.

Five walks, a hit batter and three hits were costly in a three-run sixth.

Justin Dossey (Aubrey, Tx / Aubrey HS, Murray State Univ) made his debut over the weekend. He played two complete games for SAGU.
