Today's single game rained out

Pisors, Turley to start vs Tillotson

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  The Southwestern Assemblies of God University baseball team will wrap-up the 2013 season on Saturday with a doubleheader against Huston-Tillotson University.

The twinbill will begin at 1:00pm (CST) with both games played on the team's new campus field.

Heavy rains on Thursday have caused the cancellation of the today's nine-inning solo contest. It was set for a 2:00pm first pitch. The forecast for Saturday is a partly cloudy sky, mild winds with a high near 70 degrees.

At stake for the Lions and Rams is eighth place in the 10-team Red River Athletic Conference. Five teams have won 30 or more games, four of them ranked in the NAIA Coaches Poll.

SAGU is 14-32 overall and 4-20 in the conference. Tillotson is 10-42 in all games and 4-19 in league action.

Head Coach Jon Shockley's squad is 11-16 at home, including 5-4 on campus. Outside of Austin, HT is 3-14.

The Lions will likely start a pair of local freshmen in Jarrod Pisors (Dallas, Tx / Red Oak HS) and Nick Turley (Ovilla, Tx / Ovilla Christian HS). They are a pair of elevated right-handers.

Pisors is 6-foot-7, the bearded Turley 6'5. In 63 innings, Pisors (PY-sohrs) has struck out a team-best 58 batters while walking only 19. He has three of the team's six complete games.

Health and effectiveness, combined with a season-ending injury to expected workhorse, Robert Elles (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS) in his first start, enabled Pisors to fill that role.

Pisors best performance came on the road against Jarvis Christian College (30-20, 14-9 in RRAC) on February 23. He threw a complete game one hitter, walking none and ringing up six K's.

He allowed one hit, which came in the ninth inning of a game the Lions led 1-0. The centerfielder overran the ball allowing a baserunner and the hitter to score for a 2-1 Jarvis triumph.

A complete-game, six-hit shutout against Arlington Baptist College was another feather in his cap. Again, he yielded no walks. He struck out seven in a 9-0 win at the Waxahachie Sports Complex.

Turley, often used in middle relief, has 30 innings under his belt without a decision. He has fanned 19 and given 14 free passes.

Nineteen players have pitched this spring, 15 of them freshmen. Of the team's 44 games, 37 of them were started by rookies.

Another area prep star, Hayden Killebrew (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS), is expected back after missing the last third of the season. He is 2-3 this season.

Three other players are tied with him at two triumphs, though none of them are on the current, active roster. He could claim the team lead with a win in relief on Saturday.

SAGU has a collective batting average of .266 and score 4.61 runs per game. The Rams hit .254 and cross the plate 4.02 times per outing.

On the hill, the Lions young arms possess a 7.83 earned run average, the fourth time in five seasons it has been over seven per game. The Rams ERA is 7.87.

While the Lions enter Saturday on a seven-game losing skid, HT has dropped six in a row. Both teams have gone 1-14 over their last 15 games. SAGU's record still rates higher than three teams in the Red River.
