Killebrew, Pisors recall SAGU triumph over USAO

Lions have most conference wins in six years; host St. Greg's next weekend

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  A day after a low-point defeat on the road, Southwestern Assemblies of God University needed a hug. They got a lot more.

The Lions responded like soldiers to a trumpet’s call to arms.

In arrears, 2-0, SAGU pecked away until taking a 3-2 lead on their way to a three-run surplus in the last inning. They would hold off a late rebuttal from the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma for a 5-4 victory.

Like a carpenter needs a handsaw, Head Coach Sam Blackmon’s club could’ve used a strong pitching effort. A pair of former teammates at neighboring Red Oak High School delivered the goods.

Sophomore hurlers Hayden Killebrew and Jarrod Pisors collaborated to provide some much needed tonic.

Killebrew, at 6’2, went five and two-thirds of an inning before yielding to the 6’7 Pisors. He scattered eight hits, walked one and struck out two in improving his record to 3-1.

When he got in a jam in the sixth it was Pisors who stepped in to earn his first collegiate save. With two runners on base and one out, he retired the next two batters, the last going down swinging.

“I threw a slider to the guy that popped out and a two-seam up and away to the last guy (in the sixth),” confessed Pisors.

“(Catcher, Jared) Denton and I were on the same page for the last guy (in the seventh inning),” Pisors said of the game’s final batter, whom he fanned.

His battery-mate, Denton, set-up the high fastball that the batter chased by calling for a pair of split-fingered fastballs.pisors-pitching-at-ftw

“My fastball was my best pitch (yesterday),” Killebrew said after the 225-mile return bus trip home. “It had a lot of movement on it.”

The effectiveness was sharpened by his ability to “mix up the locations as well as changing speeds,” he explained. The result was an off-balance hitting attack by the Drovers.

“It was very important for us to come back strong after getting beat the day before,” stated Killebrew.

SAGU has 19 freshmen and sophomores and they have helped trigger the team to a 6-9 mark against the Sooner Athletic Conference. That’s the most wins in league play in six years.

Killebrew’s earned run average improved to 4.67, second among Lions starters to Pisors’ 3.11.

His said that his pitch count (75) wasn’t the factor in his being pulled.

“We were leading, it was late and they were threatening,” he said. “It was cool seeing Pisors come in and have my back on the mound.”

After resting his right arm for two weekends, how did the big guy look?

“He looked strong,” observed Killebrew.

The same can be said of both.

As freshmen they combined for a 3-13 mark. Killebrew’s 8.89 and Pisors’ 8.26 ERA totals were not distinguished.

The right-handers have improved their control, evidenced by a decrease in walks allowed. A clearly improved defense has benefitted the duo as well as the entire pitching staff.

“It was great to be back on the mound,” admitted Pisors. “My arm felt relatively well. They managed to get one solid hit off me (a double) to right-center. The others were weak ground balls.”

“We got the ‘W’ and that's all that matters to me.”
