Lady Lions host Sat twinbill at 10am, Noon

Baseball Lions on verge of post-season life, play at 3pm

Summary of Friday's Action / Full Report on Saturday

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  The Southwestern Assemblies of God University women's softball team nipped visiting Hillsdale College (Ok) two times on Friday, both times by the slimmest of margins, 5-4 and 8-7.

The Lady Lions, now 11-39, will host Hillsdale (5-29) in another twinbill on Saturday. The first game will begin at 10:00am (CST). Following the game, senior players will be honored. Game Two will begin at approximately 12 noon.

From noon until 2:00pm the Lady Lions will have a special Burger Bash fund-raiser when an IN-N-OUT Hamburgers mobile unit will sponsor the event.

Fans can purchase a $5 ticket for an In-N-Out burger, chips and a drink. Proceeds will go towards the team's summer missions venture.

Meanwhile, the SAGU baseball club wound-up on the short end against nationally-ranked Northwood University (Tex), 8-1 and 8-2. They welcome the Knights for a 3:00pm regular season finale at 3:00pm Saturday.

The team will hold a brief ceremony to recognize seniors at 2:40pm.

The Lions can clinch a berth in the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament with a win or two losses by either Mid-America Christian University or St. Gregory's University.

MACU lost to No. 15 Oklahoma City University on Thursday and Friday, while St. Gregs fell to No. 1 Oklahoma Baptist University two times. One of the two teams, the Evangels or Cavaliers, will join SAGU in the SAC tourney next week.

The Lions must topple the Knights to earn a spot in the NCCAA Central Regional tourney.

SOFTBALL SUMMARY

Game One - The Lady Lions scored three runs in the third inning to grab a 4-3 lead en route to a posting a 5-4 triumph. A groundout by Hannah Lee drove in the tying run, with a second run scoring on an errant throw on the same play.

Bethany Krock drove in single runs in the first and sixth innings, the latter giving the Purple Pride a 5-3 lead.

SAGU collected just six hits, but were aided by six walks and four errors by the Saints.

Lee was awarded the win, her sixth this season. It ties the team record for victories - set a year ago by Shannen Davis-Nance.

Lee scattered 10 hits, walked none and fanned three. She was touched for four runs, half of them earned.

Game Two - Four listless innings by SAGU witnessed them outscored by a 7-1 count and outhit 8-1. They somehow rose up from the canvass with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth frame to pull out an 8-7 comeback.

With the sun setting quickly, one batter after claiming their first lead, 8-7, officials called the game due to darkness.

The Pride had seven hits in the rally, the last two by the team's No. 4 and No. 5 batters. Kelsey Coburn hit a line-drive single to left-center to draw the Lady Lions to within 7-6.

Heather Wyatt then crushed a deep, game-winning triple to the fence in right-center to knock in two more runs.

The win went to Feliciana Maldonado. She came in to relieve Lee, the starter, after Hillsdale took a 4-1 lead. She surrendered three more runs, permitting three hits while fanning three batters.

Brittney Johnson and Wyatt each had two RBI's. Amber Gignac added two hits and scored twice.

BASEBALL SUMMARY

Game One - The Knights grabbed a quick 8-0 lead against Hayden Killebrew. They utilized eight hits and three walks to seize control of the game.

Tucker Burt entered the game and, in four innings, permitted no runs. He yielded three hits and issued zero walks. He whiffed three.

SAGU had just four hits, with Raul Castro accounting for two. A groundout to shortstop by Clay Gentle drove in Preston Hornbeck for SAGU's lone run.

Game Two - Ditto the Lions start from the first game. Northwood vaulted to an 8-0 lead by bunching seven hits  -  four of them as doubles, and added three early walks, to chase SAGU ace Jarrod Pisors in less than three innings.

Team Purp was held to five hits, with Jeremy Cross going 2-for-2.

The Lions put up a crooked number in the sixth with RBI's off the bats of Brock Schneider and Castro. Josh Terry and Cross scored the runs.

Once again it was Burt, a 6'5 hard-throwing freshman, who spelled Pisors (5-5). He finished the final 4.1 innings, giving up three hits, one earned run, no walks while whiffing four.

SATURDAY REPORT - A detailed review of all weekend games, will be posted on Saturday. Photos from Moving Pictures will be available on-line.
