SAGU Owensby and alumni collaborate on "Hidden in Plain Sight"Waxahachie, Texas — October 10, 2013 — Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) professor Garland Owensby writes about the importance of campus evangelism in his chapter of the multi-authored book "Hidden in Plain Sight: America's Unreached Mission Field."

Owensby said, "Hidden in Plain Sight is about equipping leaders, students, and parents who have a passion to see United States public schools transformed by Christian morals."

SAGU Athletes Outreach Director Jaroy Carpenter and alumni Andrew Burr, Jon Catron, Steven McKnight, Ricky Franklin, Jared Patterson, Stacey Hendrix and Steven Reed also contributed chapters.

SAGU alumni and main author Kyle Embry is a pastor and the Director of Youth Alive North Texas, an outreach ministry committed to reaching students in public schools. Embry said, "We serve the schools in any way possible to create pathways for the local churches to be able to minister to the younger generations. Our goal is to raise up campus missionaries who start campus Bible clubs and start discipleship within their public school."

He added, "We wanted to create a resource that would reflect the collaboration of missionaries and youth pastors in campus ministry. We learn and continuously grow from each other."

"There are no experts," Embry said. "Only leaders that stay humble enough to ask questions and stay fresh through daily obedience. It takes hard work and many years of faithfulness to truly make a difference on public school campuses." In 2011, Embry graduated SAGU with a Bachelor of Arts in church ministries.

Owensby incorporates over 20 years of youth ministry experience into his chapter. Prior to serving at SAGU, he ministered as a children's/teen evangelist with Don Triplett and the Castillo del Rey team in El Salvador, Central America. Then he served in local church ministry, first as youth and children’s pastor at Northside Assembly of God (Elizabeth City, North Carolina) and then as youth pastor of First Assembly of God (Ocala, Florida).

Garland earned a Bachelor of Arts in pastoral ministries from Southeastern College (Assemblies of God) in Lakeland, Florida. He holds a Master of Science in practical theology and a Master of Arts in Bible and theology from SAGU. He also completed a Doctor of Educational Ministries from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (Ft. Worth, Texas). He is SAGU's Youth and Student Ministries Coordinator.

Owensby spoke about the youth evangelism class he teaches at SAGU, "We offer an opportunity to get on the public school campus and evangelize. We inform them what they are legally allowed to do, and it gives our students the opportunity to practice campus ministry hands on before the stakes are high and their jobs could be on the line."

Other co-writers include: Jon Catron, Dave Roever, Steve Pulis, Joel Stockstill, Jim Coursey, Adam Herod, Landon Huie, Tarah Morris, Daniel Norris, Josh Pulis, Al Roever, and Jared Stump.
