SAGU welcomes Louisiana College

Lions, Wildcats: building something good!

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  Saturday’s first-ever encounter between Southwestern Assemblies of God University and Louisiana College is also the initial foray into broadcasting soccer on campus.

The doubleheader features a 3:00pm (CST) clash between the Lady Lions (0-3) and the LC Wildcats (2-1).

SAGU has dropped back-to-back 2-1 setbacks. For National College Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Louisiana College (Pineville, La), this is their best start since 2007.

Southwestern and Louisiana College are meeting for the first time on the soccer pitch.

They have won consecutive shutouts; 2-0 over St. Catharine’s College (Ky) and yesterday’s 5-0 whitewashing at Dallas Christian College.

The men’s teams from SAGU and LC will tangle at 5:00pm. The Lions are 2-1, while the Wildcats are 2-0.

The National Weather Service is calling for a high of 86 degrees and a partly cloudy sky. Temperatures in the Metroplex have surpassed 100 the past week, including 103 on Friday. The forecast is a welcomed relief. Windy conditions of north-northeasterly gusts, 15-19 mpg, are expected.

First Soccer Broadcast: Shooting Lions, Wildcats!

Both games will be aired by SAGU Sports Live, a first for Southwestern soccer.

The broadcast is in authentic high definition, the only NAIA college whose livestream is delivered with HD quality.

The Lions already air all home football games, about six home volleyball matches and around ten basketball games.

Rob Price and Tim Roberts will be at midfield calling the game. Price is the host and play-by-play man, while Roberts brings the color.

Bianca Alarcon, one of nearly twenty students involved on the staff and technical crew as media, communications or digital arts majors, is the sideline reporter.

Louisiana College Lady Wildcats

The ‘Cats have struggled in recent seasons, racking up six wins since 2008, including the two so far this fall. Head Coach Bruce Deaton is in second year in Izzard County in north-central Arkansas. The feeling on campus is that the turnaround has begun.
The team just returned from visiting St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis.

Senior Emily Breaux (BRO), a 5-foot-7 keeper from Lafayette, broke the American Southwest Conference record for saves two years ago.

The team has 40 on its roster, with 22 listed as freshmen.

About the LC Wildcats Men

Head Coach Prince Borde has the club off to a 2-0 start. Wins have not been plentiful in Pineville of late, though the collection of talent has elevated their hopes.

Raffi Ferriera is one of the ASC’s most skilled players. The center midfielder, is the point guard for the Cats attack.

Fellippe Albuquerque is a freshman forward who is turning heads. His game is bigger than his frame if his two goals against Huntingdon are an indication.

The blue and orange cladded Wildcats seek to develop both their depth and meshing their skills into a more cohesive effort.

“They’re young and energetic,” SAGU Head Coach Clem Oancea (WAHN-cha) stated this week. “Their team doesn’t have many upper classmen, but they will be a good challenge for us. We're young too.”

SAGU Lady Lions Update

“My hope is that we play better at the possession game,” said Head Coach Mandy Fortner on Friday. “Spreading the field while controlling the ball is our focus. It forces opponents to defend our style of play.”

Team Lioness has grappled to form a stronger attack. Pulling the trigger on more shots is improving, as is the squad’s collective defense.

Gloria Lozano (El Paso, Tx / Sorocco HS) and Noelle Pugliese (Lee’s Summit, Mo / Lee’s Summit North HS) have scored the team’s two goals. Forwards haven’t got untracked in the first three games.

“We have a few players still out with injuries,” Fortner added. “But I don’t think it will affect our game considerably.”

Sophomore netminder Haley Shingleton (Pasadena, Tx / Deer Park HS) is back from a lingering shoulder ailment. She has surrendered just two goals in each of the two games she’s been between the pipes in the last week.

SAGU Lions

Team Purp hangs their hat on precision teamwork, playing the possession game and spirited oneness. “We still must develop creativity in the attack from start to finish,” Oancea added.

“We have been preparing really hard for the last month,” he continued. “One of the top coaches once said: “The vision of a champion is someone who is bent over, drenched in sweat, at the point of exhaustion, when no one else is watching.”

“Our guys are acquainted with training hard. They’ve been sweating it out. With that in mind,” the native of Romania pointed out, “there is no excuse not to perform at a higher level every single time we step onto the pitch. Every game has to mean more, and we must perform like it’s our final if we want to go further than last year.”

The Lions rolled past Southwestern College on Monday, 9-1, with balanced scoring. Danny Martinez (Houston, Tx / Cypress Creek HS) had a breakout effort with three goals and one assist.

Southwestern received good news this week. Ben Cole (Austin, Tx / McNeil HS) was cleared to play by the NAIA. The 5’10 junior is a defender.

Both the men and women’s teams play next Wednesday, Sept. 12, in the Texas Panhandle town of Plainview. SAGU will meet Wayland Baptist University. The Lady Pioneers are currently 3-2, while the Pioneers are 3-0.
