Southwestern vs. Wiley College, 3pm

Scoring records could fall this afternoon

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  Today’s college soccer doubleheader between the visiting Wiley College and Southwestern Assemblies of God University pits team who are confident a win would propel them into the stretch run of their season.

The Wildcats men’s and women’s teams are in town to take on SAGU in a pair of Red River Athletic Conference games.

Wiley began their men’s program a year ago, going 0-10-1. Their lone non-loss came at the expense of SAGU after a scoreless, double overtime tie.

That game cost the Lions a berth in the RRAC tournament and, when finished, the Wildcats celebrated around their coach on the Southwestern field.

The women are into their inaugural campaign this fall, and bring an 0-7 mark into their game this afternoon. It will be the first-ever meeting of the two, purple-clad teams.

Here is a preview of the women's contest:

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Wiley College (0-7, 0-4 in RRAC) at SAGU (3-9, 1-3), 3:00pm

Two of the conference’s youngest programs, the newbie Wildcats and the Lady Lions, who got underway in 2006, will clash in the second game today.

Located in Marshall, the Wildcats will make a 170-mile jaunt in search of both their initial goal and their first victory.

Southwestern can well-relate. In their debut season the Purple Pride was outscored 119-4 during an 0-16 year. WC has currently surrendered 64 unanswered goals through seven contests.

Maria Ruiz and Luz Quintanilla are their leaders in shots, while Natasha Celedon and Esmeralda Juarez have shared duties in the goal.

SAGU will equal their most-ever wins (4) with a triumph this afternoon. Team Lioness has scored 19 and given up 23, ranking sixth and eighth in the RRAC.

Team Purp can tie the team mark for most goals in a single season with their next tally. In 2009 they booted 20. In both 2007 and 2008 they had 19.

Amy Lambdin (Stockton, Cal / Elliot Christian) spearheads the offense with 11 points (5 goals, 1 assist), while Noelle Pugliese (Lee’s Summit, Mo / LS North HS) is second with nine (3, 3).

Amber Belisle (Roseville, Cal / Whitney HS) is third with seven (3, 1); Audrea Davila (Grand Prairie, Tx / South GP HS) has added five (3, 0) and senior Jessica Powell-Roman (Terrell, Tx / Terrell HS) has five (2, 1).

Eight different players have scored.

Haley Shingleton (Pasadena, Tx / Deer Park HS) is the top netminder, posting a pair of shutouts. Her record is 2-5 between the pipes, allowing 1.6 goals per game.

Upcoming Schedule

The Lady Lions do not play this weekend when the men are at St. Thomas (Houston). They return to action next week with a pair of away games in South Texas.

On Thursday, October 11, they will tangle with Our Lady of the Lake University (San Antonio). Two days later in the Rio Grande Valley they are slated to face the University of Texas at Browsville.

Player Scoring Records

Lambdin’s five goals is currently tied for fourth most in a season. She is two away from equaling the school mark of seven by Allison Malcomb in 2007.

Madison Wells (2009) and Elyse James (2008) each netted six. The most points in a season is 16, tied by both James and Malcomb.
