Samantha Gonzales signs with Lady Lions

Paris Jr. College forward brings scoring punch

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  The women’s soccer team at Southwestern Assemblies of God University has added another player they hope will be an offensive contributor this season.

Having worked to build the foundation on an effective defense, third year Head Coach Mandy Fortner is now recruiting to ignite an erratic offense.

The Lady Lions allowed only 32 goals in 2012, just 1.78 per game.

Offensively they put 28 goals (1.56 pg) in the back of the net, a figure they hope to increase.

Samantha Gonzales agreed to enroll as a student-athlete at SAGU.  She led Paris Junior College (Paris, Tx) in scoring as a freshman. She played at forward and at center-midfielder.

Playing under veteran Head Coach Lance Noble, who began the Dragons program last year, she combined with MVP Morgan Flippen to lead the team to a playoff berth in their first season.

Gonzales was nominated for All-Conference in the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Division I. She booted six goals in 13 games and led the team in shots as well as shots on goal.

The 5-foot-3 forward from Dallas hails from nearby Red Oak High School.

The Class 4A Lady Hawks, under the steady direction of Head Coach Laurie Norrell, succeed in one of the toughest districts in the state, including the likes of Waxahachie and Corsicana High Schools.

Gonzales was Honorable Mention All-District as a sophomore before a breakout season as a junior when she earned First Team District. She was also named the Offensive MVP for the maroon-clad Hawks.

Throughout her prep career she enjoyed success at Red Oak, where each year they advanced to the fourth round in the state playoffs.

She also played club soccer for Gabe Adames and the Dallas Texans Red South ’94 team.

Her parents are Ezequiel and Dina Gonzales. Samantha has two brothers; Jonathan Segundo (21) and Eduardo “Noah” Gonzales (13).

Segundo played for SAGU during the 2010 season, leading the Lions in shots (46). He played in 17 games, scoring five goals and registering four assists.

She plans to study psychology at SAGU.

Gonzales has also relished past summers in which she attended bible camps and is open to expanding her horizons on a missions trip in college.

Coach Fortner expects between 25 and 30 players this season, almost half of them new recruits or transfers.

The Class of 2013 recruiting class currently includes;
Witney Burns (San Antonio, Tx / Warren HS),  MF
Kaylie Cox (Midlothian, Tx / Midlothian HS),  Def
Sharaya Eiland (Quinlan, Tx / Ford HS),  MF-Def
Kathleen Espinosa (Corpus Christi, Tx / King HS),  GK
Samantha Gonzales (Dallas, Tx / Paris JuCo, Red Oak HS),  F
Kristen Lambdin (Stockton, Cal / Elliot Christian),  Def
Kaylee Perry (Krum, Tx / Krum HS),  F
Mariah Sanchez (Grand Prairie, Tx / South G.P. HS),  Def
Madeleine Thornley (Flower Mound, Tx / Marcus HS),  MF

About SAGU Women's Soccer

The Lady Lions, 6-11-1 in 2012, report for pre-season camp on Monday, August 12. The week before the squad has the opportunity to join a service and ministry trip to the southern Texas town of Leakey (pronounced LAY-kee).

SAGU will compete in the NAIA’s 11-team Sooner Athletic Conference in the fall. The Purple Pride has an 18-game schedule, eight of them on their home pitch. The schedule is currently posted on the SAGU website.

SAGU’s first home contest is slated for the first day of school, Wednesday, September 4. Johnson & Wales University, from Denver, will provide the competition. The Wildcats are beginning their inaugural season this year.

The Lady Lions look to have a few select games broadcast on-line by SAGU Sports Live. The dates have yet to be determined. An announcement about which games will appear on HD live video should come later in the summer.
