Watch Friday's 1pm game vs. Sterling College

Freshman Kaylie Cox scores for SAGU

wsoc-semanthaWINFIELD, Kansas  --  In the city that housed the Crayola manufacturing plant for nearly 50 years, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University women’s soccer team began the new season wearing new threads.

But it was the host team, Southwestern College, who played as though colored like the weather; red hot.

They extended a tight, 1-0 halftime lead with three goals in the first seven minutes of the second half to hand SAGU a 5-1 loss on Thursday afternoon. It was 98 degrees in south Kansas.

The Lady Lions, with five freshmen in the starting line-up, fought hard against a Moundbuilders team that has had back-to-back winning seasons. The hosts played aggressively, evidenced by earning nine of the game’s ten cornerkicks.

SC held a 27-10 advantage in shots, including a 13-6 margin in shots on goal.

Even with their mounting pressure, the Builders didn’t score against Angelina Bickley, the Lady Lions’ freshman goalie, until late in the first half. The tally came just six minutes before intermission.

Southwestern tacked on three more coming out of the locker room for a commanding 4-0 lead.

Donning purple, white and grey road uniforms, the Lady Lions never gave up the battle.

They scored in the 55th minute when Kaylie Cox (Midlothian, Tx / Midlothian HS) registered her first collegiate goal.

Amber Belisle (Roseville, Cal / Whitney HS), a junior midfielder, led the attack with three shots, all of them on goal. Fellow Golden Bear, Amy Lambdin (Stockton, Cal / Elliot Christian HS), last year’s leading scorer, came off the bench to unleash three shots as well.

Lyndi Garrison (Hastings, Mich / Thornapple Kellogg HS) booted two shots, while Cox and freshman Maddie Thornley (Flower Mound, Tx / Marcus HS), were credited with one each.

Four substitutes entered the fray; Lambdin, her sister Kristen (Stockton, Cal / Elliot Christian), Witney Burns (San Antonio, Tx / Warren HS), and backup keeper Kathleen Espinosa (Corpus Christi, Tx / King HS).

The match, played at the Richard L. Jantz Stadium, was the season opener for both teams.

SC is in their seventh year, one more than SAGU. They were 10-9-0 and 10-8-1 the past two campaigns and now lead the series between the two clubs, 4-1.

Friday's game in Sterling will be livestreamed

SAGU will be back in action on Saturday when they meet Sterling College at 1:00pm. Located in Sterling, Kansas, it is 120 miles northwest of Winfield (490 miles from Waxahachie). Sterling has two proven offensive performers back from last year’s 13-6-0 team; Kenya Renteria (12 goals, 7 assists) and Kaylee Schell (5 goals).

The game will be broadcast on video at scwarriors.com starting at 1:00pm (CST).

A year ago in Waxahachie the Lady Warriors edged SAGU in a 2-1 verdict. Sterling owns wins in each of the three meetings between the teams.

First home game on Wednesday afternoon

The Lady Lions make their home debut on Wednesday, September 4. They will entertain Denver’s Johnson & Wales University at 1:00pm. The Wildcats, 1-1, play at Texas College on Labor Day.
