About SAGU

For many, summer evokes vivid memories – the warmth of the sun and smell of sunscreen while relaxing by the pool, adventurous family vacations, or the cool taste of ice-cream on a hot afternoon. Each spring as the semester winds down, students excitedly make plans for the 3-month break. Many use the opportunity to blend much-needed relaxation with internships or academic projects to get ahead in their studies.

In part two, we asked five more Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Lions how they are spending their summers. To view the first five students click here.

Josh Aldrich, '15, Intercultural Studies
At the beginning of summer, you can find Josh in the beautiful city of Paris, France. Growing up there as a missionary kid for seven years, he returned to work and visit friends. During his visit, he wrote and arranged music for Eglise Horizon (Horizon Church), an Assemblies of God church in south Paris. On May 8, they recorded a live concert with Josh playing lead electric and went into the studio to complete a French worship album that will release in September. Staying with a friend in Fontainebleau-Avon, his one-bedroom apartment was five minutes away from one of Napoleon's vacation castles that the city is built around. Josh was able to revisit the Eiffel Tower, Notre dame, La saint mere eglise, and many more. Once he returned to the States, he traveled to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where he used his years of playing football to help lead a sports camp for inner city kids. He is currently on tour with Ransomed, one of four traveling music groups from SAGU, and working a missionary kids camp in Missouri. "For these teenage kids, camps are a time of spiritual renewal. I wouldn't want to spend my summer any other way."

Erick Quan, '15, Business
Erick is in Sanya, Hainan, a province of China, where he is helping develop summer programs for Highland International School. He is also working with the largest residential real estate developer in the People's Republic of China called Vanke. There he is working in advertisement and promotion, managing inventory, planning projects, and training effective English teachers. "There is a great change in culture and how people view things in China. I am learning a lot. This is a once in a lifetime experience, and I will cherish it for the rest of my life."

Tsehaynesh Castillo, '17, Church Ministries
Tsehaynesh (say-hi-nish) began the summer in a small town outside of Omaha, Nebraska, spending time with friends and family. It was only a matter of weeks until she traveled to Perth, Australia, with her Mission TEN team. They are ministering at local elementary and high schools by talking to the students about self-identity and sharing their personal testimonies. She is also working with Whitford Church and their youth ministry. She wants to employ the methods of reaching the youth that she learned in Australia back to her home church. "Working with the youth and youth leaders has made me realize a new passion for reaching this generation. I really would have never expected God to be using me this way in my walk with Him."

Salvador "Chava" Avila, '16, Church Ministries
Salvador is a summer Residential Assistant at SAGU and is preparing for his last semester with the men's varsity soccer team. Not only is he following an extensive pre-season training schedule, he is a volunteer administrative and young adult Pastor in a Hispanic/English church called Misterios La Familia (Family Ministries) in his home town of Arlington, Texas. He travels once a month to San Antonio, Texas, where his church ministers and disciples young adults. He also ministers in Fort Worth, Texas, through another church program to disciple families through their Family Group program. "Being involved with the different programs at my church allows me to meet and create relationship with a lot of different people. It's all about making a difference in the lives of others."

Samuel Mills, '15, Business Management
Apart from watching the World Cup, working out, spending time with family, and volunteering at his church, Sam is interning at Nordstroms, a nation-wide upscale fashion retailer in his hometown of Converce, Texas. At Nordstroms, he is learning the ins and outs of how a retail business meets customer needs, manages inventory, uses strategic product placement, compares monthly and yearly sales, and practices critical thinking within the department. Sam volunteers for the Royal Ranger program at Victory Assembly of God and helps with the food pantry that serves 15-20 families a week. "Everything I have learned in my business classes, I'm seeing in real life and how it applies in the long term."
