Jason Covarrubias hits the ground running

Mens and Womens teams to begin inaugural season

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  One doesn’t need a minute to know that Southwestern Assemblies of God University’s new cross country coach operates with a full tank.

Athletic Director Jesse Godding has announced that Covarrubias has taken the reins of both the men’s and women’s Cross Country teams. They will begin their first season this fall.

“During the search for SAGU’s inaugural cross country head coach,” Mr. Godding said, “it became clear that among some other very fine candidates Jason had both the coaching experience and the capacity to fit into and promote the culture of SAGU athletics.”

“I am confident he will be committed to building the Kingdom of God through athletics while building a competitive cross country team,” he added.

The new sport marks another addition to the SAGU athletic family since Godding began two years ago. Softball was the most recent to join.

Covarrubias (KO-va-ROO-bee-yahs) has a great passion for the sport, and welcomes the opportunity.

“I welcome the chance to build the program from the start,” he said yesterday. “Plus, I love the sport, the area and we live in Midlothian.”

He comes to SAGU after doing similarly at Arlington Baptist College, where the Patriots won the *NCCAA Division II Cross Country National Championship in just their second year of existence in 2012.

Prior to coming to ABC, he was the Head Coach at nearby Cedar Hill High School for six seasons. Under him the team qualified for their first-ever Regional 5A berth (2007) in school history.

He served as their Assistant Coach for three years before getting the top job of the Running Longhorns.

Covarrubias, 34, earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Christian Studies with an emphasis in Marketing from Dallas Baptist University in 2002.

He was a two-year member of the Cross Country and Track team at DBU.

He added a Master’s Degree in Educational (Administration) Leadership from Arlington Baptist.

Along with his wife, Sarah, and four year old son, Noah, the Covarrubias family live in nearby Midlothian. They have strong ties to the Salvation Army's Camp Hoblitzelle, where both Sarah and Jason hold separate positions.

Covarrubias is originally from Rosenberg, Texas (southwest of Houston, near Sugar Land). He graduated from B.F. Terry High School.

The new coach stated that the team will announce the first three recruits who have signed to study and run at SAGU this season. Four current students have committed to compete as walk-ons.

SAGU’s schedule includes four meets; two in September, two in October. Their first is on Saturday, Sept. 7, in Abilene, Texas, hosted by McMurry University.

The team will then run in the Sooner Athletic Conference championship in Shawnee, Oklahoma on November 9.

Both the men’s and women’s teams compete in each meet, the men’s running an 8K (5 mile) course while the women are set for 5K (3.1 miles) venues.

The entire schedule, including post-season nationals, will soon be posted on the SAGU athletic website.
