Jesse Godding Becomes New Athletic DirectorWAXAHACHIE, Texas -- Southwestern Assemblies of God University’s athletic program turned a new page in its history when they introduced Jesse Godding as Athletic Director. The nine year head coach of the SAGU football team will take over effective June 1st.

Terry Phipps, the Vice President of Student Services and who oversees athletics at the university that set another record enrollment this year, presented Coach Godding to a small gathering of coaches and sports leaders on campus.

Godding, an engaging and effective communicator, brings a passion and vision for meshing sports and faith to a school with approximately 2,100 students. The Minnesota native is dedicated to building spiritual character as well as maximizing physical skills in the life of athletes. He is known for steady and purposeful leadership and perseverance.
His personal motto is “Persistence over time equals success.” It is much more than lip service to a man who lists former Nebraska coach Tom Osborne among his mentors.

In his opening comments in the Barnes Student Center on campus, Godding spoke of the current staff as “the most stable of any in the history” of SAGU’s expanding athletic program. He mentioned the challenges, needs and wants of those who lead the Lions as well as his commitment to grade well in critical areas of importance.
Those included recruiting and providing leadership to student-athletes who embrace the values of Southwestern as well as involving teams in community service and ministry outreach. He described part of the latter as having players and teams who will “champion the cause” they are serving.

SAGU fields eight intercollegiate teams; football, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, and next fall they introduce women’s softball.

SAGU Athletics are affiliated as members in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA – Division I) as well as the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA – Division I). The football Lions participate in the Central States Football League (7 teams) while all other sports are adherents in the Red River Athletic Conference, which has 15 members from four states.

The school is also a national pace-setter in sports communications. SAGU SPORTS Live produces the highest quality possible in webcasting home games in a number of sports. The high definition broadcasts, which are part of the Media Services department, equip students in the technical and journalistic areas. Fans can view home football and basketball games, free of charge.

Coach Godding has taught major courses in Business Sports Management and Physical Education. He is currently working towards his doctorate in sports management from the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, AL.
He served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Crown College (St. Bonifacius, MN), before being promoted to the head coaching position there for three years. Coach Godding spent 10 years at Trinity Bible College (Ellendale, ND) serving as head football coach and as athletic director from 1999-2002 prior to coming to Southwestern A/G university.

Coach Godding and his wife, Gina, live in Waxahachie along with their two sons Sean and Seth.
