WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- Southwestern Assemblies of God University has adjusted this weekend’s three-game series at Mid-America Christian University to avoid a high probability of rain in the Oklahoma City area forecast for Saturday.
The Sooner Athletic Conference foes were scheduled to play a doubleheader at 2:00pm on Friday, followed by a 1:00pm nine-inning game on Saturday.
Head Coaches Sam Blackmon (SAGU) and Mike Brown (MACU) switched the third game, moving it to this afternoon at the James Curtis Field. A 70% chance of precipitation on Saturday prompted the team to swap Saturday for Thursday.
SAGU is 10-14 overall and 1-5 against SAC competition, while the Evangels are 4-11 and 2-4.
Pitching Coach Chris Semprun said at practice on Wednesday afternoon that lefthander Pedro “Tres” Ortiz (Lorena, Tx / Lorena HS) will start today’s opener.
Ortiz is currently 1-3 with a 4.84 ERA.
The Lions will send senior lefty Jeremy Cross (Americus, Ga / Harker Heights HS, U. Dallas ) and sophomore right-hander Jarrod Pisors (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS ) to the hill on Friday. Cross is 2-1 and totes a 5.33 ERA; Pisors is 3-3 and 3.38.
SAGU carries a higher team batting average, .286 to .239 for the Evangels. Neither team has exhibited much power. The Lions own both of the home runs between them.
The pitching edge also leans in favor of the Lions. Their earned run average, 5.28, ranks sixth in the 10-team SAC. MACU is ninth at 7.92.
The dimensions at James Curtis are 325 feet down the lines and 375 to straight-away centerfield.
SAGU returns home next weekend, March 21-22, when the Lions entertain Southwestern Christian University (Ok) in three-games at the Waxahachie Sports Complex.
